Halachic Notes from R’ Yolkut

Ta’anis Esther

  • Pregnant and nursing women should not fast.
  • In general, Ta’anis Esther is more lenient for those with health concerns than other fast days. Anyone with health concerns should speak to Rabbi Yolkut.
  • One can get up early and eat before the fast.
  • The custom is to give machatzis hashekel on Ta’anis Esther or on Purim. Plates with coins will be available in shul.

Purim

  • All of the mitzvos of Purim, including the evening and day time Megillah readings, are incumbent on men and women.
  • Megillah
  • The mitzvah is to hear the Megillah twice, once in the evening and once in the day.
  • Please remember the mitzvah includes hearing every word of the Megillah, so if you arrive late to a reading already in progress, you have not fulfilled the mitzvah.
  • Mishloach Manos
  • At minimum, a gift of two food items to one Jew
  • Must be given during the day of Purim and not at night
  • Please think about including people who would really appreciate the mishloach manos (e.g. isolated, elderly, and non-observant Jews).
  • Matanos l'evyonim
  • A gift of money to two impoverished Jews
  • The shul collects money, so one can give in advance and the shul will serve as your agent to distribute it on Purim (both locally and in Israel).
  • Seudah
  • Can be eaten at any point on Purim day,
  • Must include bread, and ideally meat and wine,
  • Drinking must be done responsibly.

To ensure that everyone has the opportunity to vote, we strongly encourage you to apply for a mail-in ballot, Mail-in and Absentee Ballot (pa.gov).

Also, remember that Pennsylvania is a closed primary state, so it's crucial to verify your party affiliation if you plan to participate in the primary election.
