WOMEN IN MINISTRY

Part Four: Lynn Turner

Lynn Turner has been a part of Richmond’s First Baptist Church since the 1980s. She was hired to be the youth minister and thought she would only be here a few years.

But you know what they say – tell God your plans and he will laugh.

Her story begins way before her years at FBC. It’s a journey heavily influenced by moments of silent reflection and listening to God.

HELPING HONDURAS

UVA rising second year and FBC youth alum Maddie Carpenter is returning to the States after a week in Honduras on a medical mission trip. She volunteered with Friends of Barnabas, a Midlothian-based missions group that empowers Hondurans through healthcare and education.

Maddie spent the week visiting various villages to distribute medicine, wellness bags filled with toothpaste, vitamins, and other basic medications, and assisting Hondurans before and after medical procedures. Last Tuesday she wrote a blog describing a day on the mission trip. We are so proud of Maddie and her heart for this mission.

Upon Maddie’s return to the States, she will go back to Camp Silver Beach on the Eastern Shore to finish out her summer as a camp counselor.

I know a FBC student doing cool stuff!

GOOD NEIGHBOR OPPORTUNITY

National Night Out will be held on Tuesday, August 1. It is a time for neighbors to get to know each other and their local first responders. Both the Fan and Museum Districts will hold events that evening. This presents a wonderful opportunity for the people of First Baptist to interact with their neighbors.

Would you be willing to join us? We will have tables at both events and Matthew Hensley is coordinating the effort.

·       The Fan’s event runs from 5:00 pm – 8:00 p.m. in Meadow Park (corner of Meadow St. and Park Ave.)

·       The Museum’s event runs from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. in the field across from Albert Hill Middle School.

I would love to meet neighbors!

POP-UP SHOP

Charlotte Acres will hold a pop-up produce shop on Sunday, July 23 after our 11 a.m. service. It will be set up on the Mulberry Street side of the church. Supplies are limited and will go fast so make sure to get to church early!

WORSHIP AT BYRD PARK

We are taking worship on the road!  Invite a few friends to join us. We will provide food (fried chicken and sides), fellowship, and a wonderful worship service with guest speaker and FBC member Bessie Taliaferro. Dinner will be served at the pavilion. There will be picnic tables, however, if you would like to bring your own chair you are welcome to do so. Transportation is available. Please contact the church office to reserve your seat on the bus – 804-355-8637.

SUMMER STUDY BEGINS SOON!

“The Grace of Les Miserables” is a six-week character study by Matt Rawle that explores themes of grace, justice, poverty, love, redemption, and hope. The study begins each week with a short video by the author that dives into different characters from Les Mis. Participants will then engage in a time of scripture and discussion as we unpack how these themes are still relevant and prevalent in our world today.

The study begins on Aug. 7 and it will be beneficial for participants to watch "Les Miserables" on their own prior to the first meeting.  We will use Amplify Media to facilitate this study so be sure to sign up for additional information and links later in the month. A preview by the author is below!
