Participate in Coastal Cleanup Day on Sept. 20

E.J. Harrison & Sons team members will join thousands of other volunteers on Sept. 20 for the annual California Coastal Cleanup Day. We’ve been participating for years in this effort to beautify our beaches, creeks, watersheds and ocean. Our beaches and waterways are part of what makes living in our community so wonderful and I hope you’ll join us this year.

Ventura County Coastal Cleanup Days have always been a great success! Last year, 1,162 volunteers participated either on their own or at an event, and picked up 12,725 pounds of trash and recyclables. Help us make this year even better!

There are two ways to participate.

Pick a cleanup site to volunteer at on Sept. 20 from 9 a.m. to noon. Gather your supplies (help reduce waste by bringing your own bucket, gloves, water bottle, hat, etc.), and print and sign the waiver at vccoastcleanup.org/get-involved/. Pre-registration is not required! Find cleanup sites at vccoastcleanup.org/cleanup-sites/.

Can’t make it on Sept. 20? Sweep through your own neighborhood, local park, or trail any day in September on a self-guided cleanup. Use the free CleanSwell data collection app to track and report your cleanup. Find additional guidance on neighborhood cleanups at vccoastcleanup.org/get-involved/.

Tons of Food Waste Recycled at Ventura County Fair

At this year’s Ventura County Fair, Harrison Industries, fair vendors and fairgoers worked together to recycle almost 10,000 pounds of food waste! Our Clear Stream Recycling systems were set up throughout the fairgrounds. These systems allowed for easy disposal of compostable items such as food waste. We also worked closely with the fair’s many food vendors to handle their food waste. Thank you to everyone who pitched in to make this effort a huge success!

An Auction Win With a View

Over the past few years, I’ve donated a unique item to put up for bid at the Boys & Girls Club of Santa Clara Valley's annual auction.

Here’s how Jan Marholin, Director of Resource Development, described it: “Nan provides her beautiful home and we advertise ‘Wine, Heavy Appetizers and Sunset Views.’ Peter Zierhut from Haas Automation has bought this item twice! It is a fun and beautiful experience for everyone who attends. The Boys & Girls Club of Santa Clara Valley appreciates selling this donation item as all funds raised go into our organization providing excellent programs and a safe place for our youth that we serve.”

As you can see from these photos, this year’s sunset event was wonderful and joyous as always, just a perfect evening filled with friends, local dignitaries and many people from the Harrison family.

Harrison Industries has been a longtime supporter of the Boys & Girls Club of Santa Clara Valley and we sponsor many of their events, including their annual auction. The auction raises money for programs that serve the youth of Santa Paula, Fillmore and Piru.

We encourage you to support an organization that is doing so much for our young people. To learn more, call 805-525-7910 or visit bgclubscv.org.

Taxpayers Association Event Focuses on Camarillo and Oxnard Airports

“Team Harrison” learned all about our local airports during the recent monthly Ventura County Taxpayers Association (VCTA) Breakfast Club meeting.

I know we sometimes pass by either Camarillo Airport or Oxnard Airport without giving them much thought. Perhaps we even take them for granted. But the VCTA event held at Camarillo Airport on Aug. 20 was a reminder of how lucky we are to have these two airports in our community!

A good group was on hand as Ventura County Department of Airports Director Keith Freitas and department Communications and Engagement Manager Jannette Jauregui spoke about the importance of both Camarillo and Oxnard airports. Most importantly, because of their size, location and resources, both airports play a major role in protecting the public during major emergency responses such as recent brush fires.

Freitas and Jauregui also provided detailed info on airport operations, the future of aviation in Ventura County and the economic value these local landmarks bring to our region. An informative and interesting tour of Camarillo Airport followed.

This was the latest in VCTA’s series of Breakfast Club meetings, all of which we sponsor. They’re always eye-opening and informative and give a better understanding of the local economy. So far this year, we’ve learned more about water issues, Ventura County’s agricultural landscape, local transportation issues and economic outlooks for specific cities.

The next VCTA Breakfast Club meeting will be held on Sept. 17 and will focus on Southern California Edison and local energy issues such as shutdowns. Harrison will continue to support these great events and encourage those with an interest in regional economic issues to attend. Learn more at vcta.org.

Rubicon Announces Upcoming Season

Ventura’s wonderful Rubicon Theatre Company recently made its 2025-2026 early bird season announcement for renewing subscribers. The season’s theme is “At A Crossroads: Moments That Can Change Everything.”

“This season, we explore the decisions, relationships, and moments of fate that alter our lives forever,” they wrote in their announcement.

The lineup starts in December with the classic Shakespeare comedy “A Midsummer’s Night’s Dream,” in repertory with a world premiere adaptation of Dickens’ “Great Expectations.” The shows will be co-produced by the Acting Company of New York, giving audiences a rare opportunity to see these wonderful actors in distinctly different roles!

The lineup continues into 2026 with a world premiere 1970s rock musical and a riveting historical drama.

It’s sure to be another fantastic season from this local cultural gem. I know Jim and I will be purchasing season tickets just as we’ve done for years. And I always recommend the Rubicon to our friends and family. Call 805-667-2900 to get your tickets or visit rubicontheatre.org for more info.

Here’s the lineup and dates:
