CHIA Student Scholarships & Grants - March 1 Deadline
The CHIA Awards and Scholarship Fund offers CHIA Student and Active members, and California’s CAHIIM-accredited programs a variety of scholarships, awards, and grants. The purpose of these programs is to promote the importance of HIM professional credentials, strengthen the HIM profession, promote the value of AHIMA and CHIA membership, identify and engage future leaders, and support HIM-related research.

Changes to CCHIIM Domains - Effective Jan 2020
In 2019, CCHIIM’s (Commission for Certification of Health Informatics and Information Management) Recertification workgroup updated the HIIM domains to reflect current and future workforce competences and incorporate those changes in the 2020 Recertification Guidelines. The 2020 HIIM domains and descriptions are available on the AHIMA Recertification webpage and the AHIMA Recertification Guide (Fall 2019).

New Domains are effective as of January 1, 2020. A 2020 Domain Name Crosswalk is available to map the 2019 Domains to the 2020 Recertification Guide and aid members in selecting the correct domain category within the CEU Center.

Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) Situation Summary

CDC is closely monitoring an outbreak of respiratory disease caused by a novel (new) coronavirus that was first detected in Wuhan City, Hubei Province, China and which continues to expand. On February 11, 2020, the World Health Organization named the disease coronavirus disease 2019 (abbreviated “COVID-19”).

Chinese health officials have reported tens of thousands of cases of COVID-19 in China, with the virus reportedly spreading from person-to-person in parts of that country. COVID-19 illnesses, most of them associated with travel from Wuhan, also are being reported in a growing number of international locations, including the United States. Some person-to-person spread of this virus outside China has been detected. The United States reported the first confirmed instance of person-to-person spread with this virus on January 30, 2020. How Much Are Health Systems Spending on Social Determinants?

Health systems are making significant investments in programs that address social determinants of health, such as housing, employment, and food security, according to a new study published in Health Affairs.

In analysis of public announcements of new social determinants of health programs operated by US health systems from Jan. 1, 2017, to Nov. 30, 2019, researchers from New York University uncovered at least a $2.5 billion in investments from 57 health systems that collectively included 917 hospitals. The health system funds were allocated to 78 unique programs launched during that time. Read More .
Largest Study of Sepsis Cases among Medicare Beneficiaries Finds Significant Burden
U.S. Department of Health & Human Services; Feb 14, 2020

U.S. hospitals saw a 40 percent increase in the rate of Medicare beneficiaries hospitalized with sepsis over the past seven years, and in just 2018 had an estimated cost to Medicare of more than $41.5 billion according to an unprecedented study by researchers from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Sepsis is a life-threatening condition caused by the body’s extreme response to an infection. The research team analyzed data from all Medicare beneficiaries from 2012 through 2018. The study included more than 9.5 million inpatient hospital admissions, making this the largest sepsis study based on contemporary Medicare data to be published in the United States. Research team members included the HHS Office of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response (ASPR), the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), and collaborators from Acumen LLC of Burlingame, California. The study appears in the journal Critical Care Medicine. Read More
