And we’re back! After taking a short break from our email newsletter, we are pleased to present this month’s edition. 

Food security isn’t just about agriculture. It also means going beyond the farm to connect people with the tools they need to feed themselves now and in the future. That’s why innovation and partnerships – from the public and private sectors to civil society and universities – are critical to Feed the Future’s work to end global hunger and malnutrition.

As stressors like climate change threaten hard-won progress, innovation is the name of the game to ensure families have the tools they need to thrive in the face of adversity. Together with our partners, we have developed and deployed more than 1,000 innovative tools and approaches designed to make a quicker and bigger impact. We work with U.S. partners across sectors, such as universities, to scale and deliver innovations into the hands of farmers abroad and here at home.

In Nigeria, a lack of cold storage causes food loss, contributing to climate change and costing farmers revenue. In partnership with ColdHubs, Feed the Future works with smallholder farmers to install solar-powered refrigerators, increasing the shelf life of perishable foods, maximizing income for farmers and bolstering food security throughout the region. 
Mushroom farming is one of the fast-growing sectors of Nepal’s thriving agriculture industry, but spawn contamination presents a major obstacle to maximizing production and ensuring continued growth. To tackle this challenge, a Farmer-To-Farmer volunteer is providing technical know-how and techniques for training mushroom farmers. 
Developing nations bear the brunt of extreme weather events caused by climate change, yet only 10% of the damage is covered by insurance. The U.S. International Development Finance Corporation partnered with BlueOrchard to develop innovative insurance products designed to bolster resilience for smallholder farmers and protect livelihoods for vulnerable communities around the world.

This year, the U.S. African Development Foundation is celebrating four decades of community-led development across Africa. U.S. Representative Dean Phillips introduced a bipartisan resolution to commemorate this incredible milestone.
The Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) has released their Annual Report. Themed “Nurturing Change Across African Agriculture,” the report highlights progress on their efforts to improve the livelihoods of farmers and strengthen resilience among rural communities in Africa.
Camel milk is an important product in Somaliland. Thanks to its nutritional properties and a camel’s unique ability to produce milk during drought, the market for camel milk is expanding. Feed the Future and RTI International did a study to understand how camel leasing can grow incomes and build resilience during times of drought. 
In Case You Missed It
A hotter future is certain. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change released the first of their Sixth Assessment Report. This report shows how food security will suffer serious effects in the next two decades as global heating reaches 1.5C. To reduce food risk, the report also outlines adaptation measures that can be taken now.
Good nutrition is vital to human health and development. Yet, vitamin and mineral deficiencies continue to affect much of the world's population. One of the most cost-effective interventions to address this challenge is large scale food fortification (LSFF). USAID is looking for interested groups, across the public and private sectors, to support the implementation of scalable and sustainable LSFF. Submissions are due by September 3, 2021
