Dear Barbara,
There is good news--uplifting news--from Kamwenge in this newsletter.
- We’re excited about the upcoming The Fox and the Hound Ride and Walk the Wildwood in August which will go a long way to bring completion to the Carpentry and Metalworking Shop.
- Rev. John Mulindabigwi is planning to visit the US later in October/November.
- A team from 1st Pres Church in Portland OR visited Kamwenge Secondary and Vocational School in April. We sent a special edition of this newsletter last week about that trip. If you missed it, you can read that here.
- We received an encouraging note and donation for Rev. John from Greg after he returned from his visit with the Portland team. His note is included below.
The importance of our work was brought into focus this month in light of the horrific attack on a Secondary School in Western Uganda. Youth hiding across the Congo border have attacked a school north of KSVS on the border to create confusion and steal and loot the school of its resources. This is not a common occurrence and Rev John is reaching out to see the ways we can support the grieving families.
For 16 years we have sought to create a safe place for kids living in poverty in Uganda to flourish and learn critical educational and vocational skills. Our school is so important — and your partnership with us is essential for us to continue this ministry in equipping the next generation of Christian leadership.
The school attack is a reminder that our world is fragile and the presence of evil is never far from us. But we also continue in faith — this is God’s plan and He will give us the light and love to continue in this important ministry.
Please join us in prayer and in our work to shine the light, love, and hope of Jesus in Kamwenge.
In Christ,
~ Barb

Greetings in the name of our Lord Jesus.
God has upheld us in this ministry. KSVS is progressing well. Thanks for all the support and prayers that have enabled us to serve and transform the community.
Off course, we're still shaken by the incident at the school in Kasese and its neighbouring community. But we have hope and that's why we have to keep sensitizing and engaging our people, to move them from desperation to active contribution towards the development of their area.
This July, the student candidates for advancement (P.7, S.4, and S.6) will do their practice exams. We also recently had a seminar for our S.5 and S.6 Biology class at Mbarara University of Science and Technology to impact them more in line with sciences. We will hold other seminars to impact our students towards other disciplines.
Otherwise, we thank God for carrying us through the first half of the year and we trust He will carry us to the end.
Blessings,
Rev. Canon John Mulindabigwi

10th Annual Bike Ride
The Fox and the Hound Ride
August 5

Remember to register for another fun and challenging day or riding on August 5. Since 2014, riders and sponsors have provided funds for the Kitchen and Dining Hall, the STEM Center, a Girls’ Dorm, and now we’re building and furnishing a Carpentry and Metal Working Center.
The scenic Prairie Path 55-mile route allows riders to start early and end in Glen Ellyn in the early afternoon.
We love Two Hound Red Restaurant’s warm welcome of riders following the ride with friendly servers, craft beers, wine, soft drinks, and sandwiches.
The Goal: Raise funds for the multi-year project to build and furnish the new Carpentry and Metal Fabrication Center with sophisticated tools and additional space to accommodate an expanding number of students. Funds raised will also contribute to monthly operational expenses.
If you aren’t a rider, you can still support us!

2nd Annual
Walk the Wildwood
August 12

Don’t miss registration for the First Pres Church Portland 2nd annual Walk the Wildwood event which will take place on Saturday August 12, 2023. We raised over $7000 the 1st year for the new Carpentry and Metal Fabrication Center on the Kamwenge Secondary and Vocational School campus.
This year, our goal is to exceed that amount to help complete construction of and equipping the new Center. If we exceed the construction goal, we will apply additional funds to operating costs at the school.
Join us for this family-friendly event. We will have 2 guided walking routes to choose from; a 3.5-mile and a 7.5-mile option. Each route will follow trails through Washington and Forests Parks in Portland, OR and be followed by lunch (provided by Missi’pi Chef catering) at Stevens Pavilion.
Thanks to underwriting by First Presbyterian Church of Portland, 100% of registration fees and donations will go directly to the school.
If you are not able to join us for the walk, you can still support us through a donation.

We received this lovely note from Greg who visited Uganda with First Presbyterian Church Portland in April.
Greetings!
I just returned from a trip with FPC Portland to Uganda and KSVS. I was deeply touched by Rev. John, both as a person and his incredible vision for Kamwenge and KSVS.
This donation is meant to honor him. Please use it as he would see fit.
Many thanks to all of you for developing this friendship and partnership.
Blessings,
Greg Aldrich

Benjamin
Former KSVS student Benjamin was recently chosen to represent the government in supervising road works that are upgrading the Rukunyu Road. He was also elevated to be the Regional Manager for Uzima Chicken in the entire western Uganda.
Benjamin has been a dedicated overseer of the coffee projects at KSVS since he graduated from Bishop Stuart University several years ago. He began his career at Uzima Chicken Ltd in 2019, helping local residents begin small businesses of raising month-old chicks to a stage where they can be on their own, then selling them to local residents.
We heartily celebrate his promotion at Uzima and his new responsibility supervising road work.

|
Brian, a KSVS graduate who recently completed his Civil Engineering Degree at Ndejje University has been given an assignment to supervise works on one of the roads being upgraded in Kamwenge.
While attending university, Brian has also been active in helping with construction projects on the KSVS campus. He serves as an example to KSVS students to what their futures can look like if they study diligently, are respectful of others, and lead a God-filled life.

Become a Student Champion
We're changing from student sponsor to Student Champion!

To better reflect the reality of the type of influence a sponsor has on a student, we are changing the name of this program.
During our recent visits to KSVS, we have learned just how important sponsors are to their students. Beyond financial support (which is very important), sponsored students understand they have someone, who they probably have never met, still encourages and cares about them and their futures.
They read and value the letters they receive from sponsors. Even those who do not receive letters know there are friends from abroad who care about and pray for them, their spiritual growth and commitment to their education.
Because of this, from now on you will see us encouraging people to Become Student Champions.

Many are still awaiting a Champion. Join the current 84 Champions supporting 116 students.
Become a Student Champion and you will be Part of the Larger Story that is emerging in Kamwenge.
Please consider for $40/mo or $480/yr.

Prayer Requests
We value your prayers for Partners in Mission and the work on the campus of Kamwenge Secondary and Vocational School in Kamwenge!
- Pray for the school and families in Kasese struggling due to the recent attack on the school, for leaders including Rev. John who are helping that community find peace and comfort, for the Holy Spirit to give comfort to those suffering mentally and physically.
- Pray for the P.7, S.4, and S.6 students taking their practice exams in July. This time of preparation and actual exams in the fall is a very stressful time for students. In order to advance in their educational goals, students must do well in these competitive government exams which are taken by all students across the country.
- Pray for Rev. John’s visit in October/November, that he is able to obtain a visa from the US Embassy.
- Praise for the job new opportunities extended to Benjamin and Brian.
- Pray for the upcoming Fox and the Hound Ride and Walk the Wildwood, that both events are safe and enjoyable for all participants and that construction of the Carpentry and Metal Working Shop is fully funded and supplied with needed equipment.
