Healthy Eating Tips for the Holidays
'Tis the season for family, festivity and food - lots of food. Temptations are everywhere, and parties and travel disrupt daily routines. What's more, it all goes on for weeks.

Holiday-Proof Your Plan
You may not be able to control what food you're served, and you're bound to see other people eating a lot of tempting treats. Meet the challenges armed with a plan:
  • Eat close to your usual times to keep your blood sugar steady. If your meal is served later than normal, eat a small snack at your usual mealtime and eat a little less when dinner is served.
  • Invited to a party? Offer to bring a healthy dish along.
  • If you have a sweet treat, cut back on other carbs (like potatoes and bread) during the meal.
  • Don't skip meals to save up for a feast. It will be harder to keep your blood sugar in control, and you'll be really hungry and more likely to overeat.
  • If you slip up, get right back to healthy eating with your next meal.

Protecting the Health of Your Friends and Family
Want to help improve community health resilience? Here are some ways to get started!

When a disaster strikes, it could threaten health - for you, your friends, your family or even your community. But by preparing before a disaster strikes, you can help keep people safe and healthy. There are a lot of different things that young people can do to help keep themselves and the people around them healthy during disasters and emergencies. You can make an emergency kit and plan for the disasters that are most likely to strike in your area. Or you could make time to get to know your neighbors and the people in your community. We know that communities that are healthy and connected every day are much more likely to come together, stay healthy, and bounce back after a disaster. Ready to get started making your community healthier and more resilient? Check out the resources below for ideas on making your community healthier and more resilient.

Virginia Interfaith Center
The Virginia Interfaith Center was created in 1982 out of the Virginia Council of Churches as a way to involve people of all faith traditions in social justice work.

We are a broadly diverse, morally driven group of advocates working to advance public policies that better serve low-income, vulnerable, and underrepresented communities in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

We engage and educate people of faith and the public regarding critical social issues, the legislative process, and the call to advocacy.

LEARN PRAY ACT GIVE

Virginia Interfaith Center (Event)
The community is invited to come together to learn, share, and show support this Sunday, December 4, at 3:30 p.m. at Third Street Bethel A.M.E. Church (614 N 3rd Street, Richmond). This gathering is an opportunity to stand together with those who have increasingly been targeted and marginalized, and to demonstrate concern about the recent rise in hate speech, bias, and division.

The program will include speakers, sharing, and small group dialogues. Note that this is not a political or partisan event, but will focus on our common values and commitment to standing together. Event capacity is 400 and seating will be granted on a first-come, first-served basis.

Organizers of this effort include representatives from Bon Secours Richmond Health System, the Interfaith Council of Greater Richmond, Richmond Hill, Richmond Peace Education Center, St. Paul's Episcopal Church, St. Phillip's Episcopal Church, Temple Beth El, Unitarian Universalist Community Church, Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities, Virginia Council of Churches, the Virginia Interfaith Center for Public Policy, and the Virginia Muslim Coalition for Public Affairs.

  3. Take flu antiviral drugs if your doctor prescribes them.
Virginia Oral Health Report Card
Measuring Progress, Inspiring Change

Oral health is health. Good oral health is an essential part of overall health and well-being. This connection is important for everyone across the lifespan. Unfortunately, Virginia only earns a "C+" when compared to the nation's performance on the following nine key indicators of health.

The good news? This is winnable. Dental disease is preventable. State health care leaders share a collective vision for the commonwealth to become the healthiest state in the nation. This vision cannot be achieved without addressing oral health problems. Virginia, in order to achieve we must establish the necessary partnerships and commitment to improve oral health care delivery. The Virginia Oral Health Report Card is a tool to renew our focus, investment and innovation, and to support collaboration around oral health issues as we seek to become the healthiest state in the nation.
