Getting the flu means missing work, school, and special events like the big game, a wedding, spring break or a special birthday party. It puts life on hold. But even worse, for people at higher risk for complications it can be very serious, even life threatening. Stay healthy and help keep the people closest to you healthy too by getting a seasonal flu vaccine. Even if the vaccine isn't a perfect match with the circulating flu viruses, it's still the best way to prevent getting the flu. Be sure to wash your hands frequently. If you do get sick, remember to cough into your arm or elbow, and stay home so you don't spread the illness to others.

Glaucoma Awareness Month
Help Raise Awareness
In the United States, approximately 120,000 are blind from glaucoma, accounting for 9% to 12% of all cases of blindness. Here are three ways you can help raise awareness:
- Talk to friends and family about glaucoma. If you have glaucoma, don't keep it a secret. Let your family members know.
- Refer a friend to our web site, www.glaucoma.org.
- Request to have a free educational booklet sent to you or a friend.
- Get involved in your community through information sessions, group discussions, inviting expert speakers, and more.
Know the Facts
- Glaucoma is a group of diseases that damage the eye's optic nerve and can result in vision loss and even blindness.
- About 3 million Americans have glaucoma. It is the 2nd leading cause of blindness worldwide.
- Open-angle glaucoma, the most common form, results in increased eye pressure. There are often no early symptoms, which is why 50% of people with glaucoma don't know they have the disease.
- There is no cure (yet) for glaucoma, but if it's caught early, you can preserve your vision and prevent vision loss. Taking action to preserve your vision health is key.

February is Children's Dental Health Month
Tooth decay is the number one chronic disease among children in Virginia. Dental disease is five times more common than asthma and often leads to missed school hours, poor nutrition and social isolation. Kids from low-income families are more likely to have cavities than children whose parents earn a high-income. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that every child see a dentist by his/her first birthday. Establishing good oral hygiene habits and regular dental visits when they're toddlers reduces the likelihood of painful cavities and poor oral health as the child grows and it lowers the cost of dental care throughout childhood.
February is Children's Dental Health Month. The Virginia Oral Health Coalition is here to ensure the state's policies, programs and providers include oral health as part of children's comprehensive health care plan. The Coalition maintains a School-Age Oral Health workgroup to ensure readiness to learn is not hindered by poor oral health. We also provide trainings to teach pediatricians how to apply fluoride varnish gel during well visits and speak to parents about the importance of regular dental care, to give children a boost of cavity protection until they can see a dentist. And, we promote state programs, like school-based dental sealants, which have been shown to be a cost-effective and convenient way prevent cavities, especially for low-income kids.
