2017 Recovery Sunday: September 17th
Will your church consider joining churches across Virginia's Tidewater region (and others around the state and nation) in a shared effort, at the beginning of National Opioid and Heroin Awareness Week, to give Biblical and theological witness to God's plan for redemption and freedom in the lives of those struggling with addiction? If we can't discuss these issues openly at church, then we cede moral responsibility and authority to speak truth into to the lives of parishioners and into the life of our communities.

30 Smokefree Days
For Faith-Based Organizations
30 Smokefree Days is a Facebook event hosted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) Office on Smoking and Health (OSH) and the National Cancer Institute (NCI). This toolkit contains suggested social media messages and images as well as newsletter and blog text to share with your members or with others in your community who may be interested in quitting smoking.
What is 30 Smokefree Days?
30 Smokefree Days is a free 30-day quit smoking event held in Facebook for smokers who are thinking about quitting smoking, but would like some extra support along the way. It is also for the supporters of people trying to quit, or people who have already quit and would like to help support others. Starting July 10, Facebook users can join together to receive support such as links to quit resources, quit tips, encouragement, milestone badges, and exclusive video content with words of advice from Tips From Former SmokersĀ® participants. In addition, there will be Facebook Live streaming video sessions where staff from NCI will cover specific topics relevant to cessation, provide guidance on successful quit skills, and answer smokers' questions.
When is it?
The event runs from July 10-August 9, 2017, but you can start promoting right away.
How can faith-based organizations help?
You can support the event by sharing it with your members and with your community through your communication channels such as Facebook, Twitter and email/newsletters. Printable flyers included at the end of this toolkit can also be shared or posted in places of worship, community centers, and other places.

Dental Care During Pregnancy
A Safe and Important Part of Prenatal Care
Pregnancy brings many new changes in woman's body as she grows and nurtures her baby. Routine dental care and proper oral hygiene are important components of prenatal care, and they can directly improve the health of expectant mothers and their babies.
Of note, dental care during pregnancy can:
- Reduce the risk of babies who are born too small or too early;
- Reduce a mother's risk of spreading harmful bacteria to her baby;
- Increase the likelihood that the child will also visit the dentist; and,
- Reduce dental care costs in early childhood.
Experts agree that oral health care during pregnancy is not only safe but can improve general health and well-being. Studies show that pregnant women with periodontal disease have an increased risk of delivering prematurely or having a baby with low birth weight. Dental care during pregnancy can also benefit babies by reducing the bacteria in a mother's mouth that may be spread to her baby. Additionally, a child is four times more likely to visit a dentist if a parent visits a dentist. If that child begins preventive dental care by age one (as recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics), dental care costs during preschool years can decrease by as much as 40 percent.
Pregnant women ages 21 and over who are enrolled in Medicaid and FAMIS MOMS can obtain comprehensive dental services through Virginia's Smiles
For Children program. For eligibility information, visit

The Center for Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships serves as a resource center for secular and faith-based non-profit organizations seeking to partner with HUD to address the housing and community development needs of the neighborhoods in which they operate. The Center builds partnerships and serves as a liaison between the grassroots and federal government, ensuring that groups have the latest information about HUD opportunities and programs as well as other federal resources available to their communities. The Center also convenes outside partners, practitioners and organizations from the non-profit and faith communities along with policy makers and government officials to more effectively identify and meet the needs of some of the nation's most vulnerable citizens.
