Consider Hiring a Transition Student
| |
Denise Mary-Callander Stein from Addy’s Bistro contacted our office to inquire about hiring PUSD students for her restaurant in the Poway Business Park. A connection was made between Denise and Laura Estremera, a Career/Life Skills Technician for the PUSD Adult Transition Program at Abraxas High School. Several Abraxas Adult Transition students have experience working at restaurants in a variety of capacities. Denise hired one of our students with a developmental disability. In addition, on a weekly basis, two other students volunteered at the restaurant to perform light duties such as folding napkins and labeling jelly jars.
This is a win-win for Addy’s and our students in the Adult Transition Program. Working at the restaurant allows students to gain valuable work experience, helps to prepare them for a career, and instills in them a sense of responsibility and confidence. "We are in dire need of a light assembly type job site. We will pay the students, provide a job coach, and student employees will be covered under the District’s Workers Compensation," said Laura Estremera. In addition to this great opportunity, Special Education Director, Tiffany King, shares that the Adult Transition Program will be transforming the café at the District office into “the kitchen tABLE,” a café that has a goal of one day becoming a small business run completely by adults with disabilities. Students from the Abraxas Adult Transition Program will be initially utilizing this space to practice culinary, hospitality, and business management skills with a Special Education CTE teacher. If you are interested in supporting this new venture, please contact Tiffany King at tiking@powayusd.com or 858-521-2815. | |
Save the Date for the CTE EXPO |
|
CTE EXPO
May 18, 2023
6 PM to 8 PM
Mickey Cafagna Community Center
|
At the end of each school year, students look forward to the CTE Expo. This annual event provides students with an opportunity to showcase what they have learned in their CTE classes.
The CTE program offers challenging courses and CTE pathways that help prepare students for college, career and life. A CTE pathway is a sequence of two or more CTE courses within a student's area of career interest. Pathways are designed to connect high school classes to college, industry certifications, and/or a career.
| |
These courses encourage students to use their academic and technical knowledge/creativity to help solve real‐world problems, create meaningful products, explore future careers and network with industry professionals.
Exposing students at an early age to career pathways ensures that students are prepared to compete in a global economy and that our students will be well positioned to meet the state and regional workforce needs of the 21st century.
