Petersburg Fun Fact of the Week

Petersburg Goobers

Alike small communities across the United States, Petersburg fielded a team beginning in the 1880s. From 1885-1900, the Petersburg Team played in the Virginia League under numerous names such as Champs and Farmers. In 1910 Petersburg had its moment when the Portsmouth Truckers relocated and the Petersburg Goobers were born. After only one year, the Goobers won the Virginia League title, going 68-51. They secured second after going 79-54 in 1912 and once again captured the title in 1913 with an 89-46 record. One year after this second championship, the Goobers discovered the man to become their lasting legacy. Future Hall of Famer Sam Rice joined the Petersburg team during the 1914 summer and wasted no time making a name for himself. He was 24 years old when he joined and pitched a complete game after only his second start. He was eventually picked up by the Washington Senators team where he was a star outfielder for 20 years.
