we invite you to a celebration in the street!

What: Columbus Avenue Reopening: A Bike & Pedestrian-Friendly Community Celebration!
When: Wednesday, May 12, 2021, 11am-1pm **Rain date: Friday, May 14th, 11am-1pm **
Where: Columbus Avenue between Church & Orange Streets, New Haven
Directions: Enter Columbus Avenue from Church Street South, South Orange Street or from Union Avenue
Parking: Walk or bring your bike! If driving, parking will be available on Church Street South (free, on-street parking) or at the Union Station Parking Garage.
 
Columbus Avenue Reopening Celebration will feature FREE:

  • Bike-helmet Giveaway - provided by New Haven Youth & Recreation Department
  • Bike Safety mini-lessons and Q&A - provided by New Haven Coalition for Active Transportation
  • Bike Safety Checks - provided by Devil’s Gear Bike Shop
  • Public Transit information and Q&A - provided by the Connecticut Department of Transportation and CTrides
  • Adult & child-friendly summer activities information- New Haven Youth & Recreation Department
  • And much more!

The newly reopened section of Columbus Avenue is designed to accommodate pedestrians, bicyclists, and slower speed motor vehicles. It will permanently reopen to all traffic on May 15, 2021. 

Aligned with the goals of Downtown Crossing New Haven, this newly opened road will provide easy access between Downtown New Haven and Union Station for pedestrians, bicyclists, and slower speed motor vehicles, reconnecting New Haven neighborhoods and adding to the restoration of the urban street grid.
