Young Adult Group, St. Vincent de Paul
Promoting faith and fellowship for Catholics in their 20s and 30s

Greetings!

In the spirit of today's Gospel, we are reminded how Jesus called not the best of the best to follow him and proclaim His Good News, but of how he summoned quite the motley crew of ex-tax collectors, fishermen, shepherds and the like, to do the job. When it comes time to think of how we--students, healthcare practitioners, lawyers, financiers, techies, sons, daughters, husbands, wives--are called to evangelize in the world, the answer often draws a blank stare at best or a "leave it to the religious to do"-type response at worst.

In reality, we all are called to do God's work, to bring the joy of the Gospel to the world. That can come in a more grandiose package of leading a church that is struggling, working to steer a young adult group in the right direction (HINT--we're looking for people to join the team!), or even as simple as helping a stranger carry groceries on/off the bus.

Our challenge for you this week is to think about how God's calling you to help Him change the world, in your own little way. We remind you that the process of changing the world generally requires *going out into it*, so for that purpose we have provided for you three activities that you can utilize to help refresh and re-energize your inner Spirit!

Wednesday July 18th--Volunteer Appreciation Night at Heritage House! Regardless of whether or not you have ever volunteered at HH, you are still appreciated by the staff and residents there (that's a pretty sweet deal!). And if you have considered spending a Wednesday night entertaining the residents but haven't yet had the chance to go, here's your opportunity to attend in an extra relaxed atmosphere. They will be having a special concert and social to say "thank you" to all of us--and indeed, all are welcome! Thanks to Julie Screbant for hosting our volunteer group!

Saturday July 21st marks the official launch for Catholic Underground Bay Area! Never heard of Catholic Underground? Come give it a try! Heard of it and think it sounds lame? Come anyway! You won't regret it. If an evening of eucharistic adoration and prayer led by guitar-slinging Franciscan Friars doesn't pique your interest, then how about a social hour (with food!) featuring a local Catholic musical artist? And to sweeten the pot, this event is completely FREE (donations welcomed for the continuation of this ministry). If you haven't given Catholic Underground a try, this is your chance! It's going to be awesome, and beautiful, and moving, and fun--all wrapped up into one event. And if for some strange reason you don't like it, Christina Sullivan will take you out afterward for a beer. You don't get much better than that, folks.

Sunday July 22nd--Your young adult leadership team is very pleased to offer you our inaugural "First Draught" talk on Catholic theology! From your comments on the survey we sent out last year, we learned that many of you wanted to delve more deeply into your faith. So, we're happy to have the esteemed Bishop McElroy from the Archdiocese of San Francisco come discuss the controversial topic of the HHS mandate that, according to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, directly violates the Church's "conscience clause" and religious freedoms. Eastside West will be hosting our event. Light appetizers will be provided, drinks will be for sale at the bar. A suggested donation of $5-10/person is greatly appreciated so that we can continue to bring you exciting, thought-provoking events like this!

As always, if there is an event you would like to see on the calendar, please email us the details and we'll see what we can do to make it happen!

Blessings from your Young Adult Leadership Team,

Christina Bellino Sullivan, Courtney O'Hagan, Paul Boyer, Greg Sirotek, and Jonas Malalang
