Party Like it's 1752

We've been through a LOT in 269 years. And whether the market is located in Easton's historic Centre Square or on the city's picturesque waterfront, one thing remains the same - local farmers, fresh food and a passionate community. Today the Easton Farmers' Market is stronger than ever. It's hard to believe that less than 20 years ago the market was down to just one vendor (Gloria Raub), and Easton risked losing the market forever, But thanks to committed citizens like Lynn Prior and Phyllis Luafer, and PA State representative Bob Freeman, the market was saved. And in the years to follow it was Easton's grassroots, volunteer-driven spirit that set the EFM on a course for growth and success. We're grateful to all of you who helped get us to this place and we invite you and your family to come celebrate with us this Saturday. And do us a favor... help us continue to grow the EFM by bringing a friend. Introduce the market to someone new and share the incomparable spirit of America's oldest continuous, open-air market!

Early Market Days: Baker Ernest Becker

Below are pages from a book about Easton: History of the Lehigh Valley by M. S. Henry, published in 1860. We thought this was a fascinating glimpse at what was likely the humble beginnings of the Easton Farmers' Market. And a testament to the tenacity of the City's early settlers. This was was believed to have happened in the late 1740s or early 1750s. The grandson is recounting that he was still alive in 1785.
FRESH PICKS OF THE WEEK
From the Field
Cabbage Throw Farm
Summer fruits are beginning to ripen at Cabbage
Throw Farm. Yellow summer squash and green zucchini are abundant! And have you tried stuffed squash blossoms yet? Farmer Dean likes his stuffed with anchovies and ricotta, dipped into a light batter and fried. Cabbage Throw will be bringing Sicilian squash leaves, cucumbers, and some of their first heirloom tomatoes of the season!
Also on the tables this week: basil, parsley, romaine, head lettuce, spring mix, beets, carrots, yellow and red onions, garlic, escarole, cooking greens, herbs, sunflowers and more!

Recipe of the week: Stuffed zucchini boats
Cut the top and bottom off the zucchini and slice in half longways and place on a cooking sheet with olive oil. Scoop out the center and set aside.
Sauté your Favorite Breakaway meat with onion, pepper, garlic, tomato pasta, and seasoning. Add in chopped zucchini. Toast bread and blend together with basil and cheese for breadcrumb. Add half the breadcrumb to your stuffing and save have for topping the zucchini. Fill your boats and roast for 15 minutes!
Scholl Orchards
White AND yellow peaches are bountiful this week. And speaking of bounty, Scholl's has a HUGE crop of cherries this year - both sweet and tart. Plums also debut this Saturday. Try the yellow plums - so petite, sweet and yummy, just pop 'em in your mouth like cherries! You'll also find apples, tomatoes, yellow and green string beans, cukes, peppers, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, onions, potatoes and more!
Salvaterra's Gardens
Most people think of broccoli as a spring or fall crop. A vegetable to enjoy during cooler weather months. Even though is hot hot hot out, Salvaterra's has an abundance of broccoli and it's absolutely delicious grilled! Check out this recipe for Grilled Broccoli from Delish!

You'll also find head lettuce (red leaf, green leaf), lettuce mix, arugula, kale (tuscan, green, red), collards, swiss chard, cilantro, parsley, pea shoots, microgreens, scallions, spring onions, gold beets, red beets, hakurei turnips, carrots, fennel, zucchini (green and yellow), tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, green cabbage, napa cabbage, walla walla onions and broccoli.
Holy Cow Farm
Who's ready for the bold and beautiful colors of summer!? The flowers at Holy Cow Farm this week will be bright and cheerful thanks to the addition of snapdragons, sweet William, and bupleurum. These flowers have been loving all the heat, even if the farmers haven't! Be sure to stop by the flower tent to pick up some cheer for your home.
Pasture Raised
Raspberry Ridge Sheep Creamery
Rob is featuring Manchego cheese this week. This is a young cheese made with raw sheep milk and vegetarian rennet with a rich and light flavor.

Try several other cheeses and yogurts including feta (great with peaches) and spreadable cheeses. Temper the hot weather with this recipe for frozen yogurt made with sheep's milk.

Come by the tent for your favorite sheep milk products!
Breakaway Farms
In honor of the Farmers Market’s 269th birthday, Breakaway Farms is requesting your help in showering the market coordinators with love!
