South Orange Grove: Mid-Century Living on Millionaires Row
Monday, July 27, 7:30 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. [Free Public Lecture]

Join us to learn about the story behind the architecture, landscape, and interiors of Pasadena's postwar Garden Apartments. Once known as "Millionaire's Row," South Orange Grove Boulevard saw a significant shift in architectural style, from grand Victorian mansions to Mid-Century garden apartments, a result of economic shifts and the population boom that occurred in Pasadena following World War II.

With the success of our Preservation Month Lecture and Tour and due to enthusiastic requests, Pasadena Heritage's Preservation Director Jesse Lattig will again offer this presentation FREE to the public on Monday, July 27th.

The lecture will be presented at 7:30 p.m. at the
Pasadena Central Library,  Wright Auditorium
285 E. Walnut St., Pasadena CA 91101

** Seating is limited and open to the public. Be sure to arrive early to ensure a seat.

EIR710
Comment Deadline Extended for 710 Draft EIR

Caltrans and Metro have extended the public review and comment period for the SR 710 North Draft Environmental Impact Report/Environmental Impact Statement (Draft EIR/EIS) until August 5, 2015.

Metro also announced that the Analysis of Costs and Benefits (CBA) for the SR 710 North Study Alternatives has been completed and is available for download and review. The CBA is a means of applying an economic (monetary) value to alternatives (transportation proposals), which enables the costs of an alternative to be compared directly to the benefits the alternative will deliver.  The CBA will be considered in conjunction with the information provided in the Draft EIR/EIS during identification of the Preferred Alternative. You can download the document by  clicking here.

The alternatives being evaluated in the SR-710 Draft EIR/EIS include construction of new facilities, improvements to enhance and optimize the efficiency of the existing transportation system, and No Build (completion only of previously approved projects). The four build alternatives are:
1) Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Alternative
2) Freeway Tunnel Alternative (with design and operational variations)
3) Light Rail Transit (LRT) Alternative
4) Transportation System Management/ Transportation Demand Management (TSM/TDM) Alternative
Pasadena Heritage is concerned that construction of a freeway tunnel would threaten the numerous historic buildings located above the proposed route and that increased traffic and air pollution would diminish the livability and stability of these historic neighborhoods. We believe a transportation plan focused on the needs of the entire region will yield a better solution for the residents and business owners who live and work in our many historic communities. Pasadena Heritage supports the group of cities, organizations, and individuals who make up the 'Beyond the 710' coalition. Learn more about their efforts at:   www.beyondthe710.org

Go to our website by clicking here to learn more about the project, ways to get involved, and to share your comments, questions, and concerns with Caltrans and Metro!

Beloved United Artists Building Nominated as Local Landmark!

New owners of the former United Artists Theater have nominated the 1931 movie theater at 600 E. Colorado Blvd. as a local Pasadena Landmark. The distinctive Art Deco building was designed by Walker & Eisen, the architecture firm known for its Oviatt Building (1927), Ace Hotel and Theater (1927), and the original portion of the Beverly Wilshire Hotel (1926).

Early on, the United Artists Theater was used as a "preview house" to screen pre-release cuts of films to the general public, critics, and the press. Alfred Hitchcock's Suspicion showed here in June 1941 as did Orson Welle's The Magnificent Ambersons in March 1942.

Despite this pedigree, the theater's Art Deco fa?ade was covered and the original marquee removed in a 1960 "renovation." Consequently, the building could not be included in the 1994 designation of the Playhouse National Register Historic District. The theater closed in 1990 and remained vacant until 1997, when new owners undertook an extensive interior and exterior restoration. Pasadena Heritage assisted with this process. The United Artists building today is notable for its terrazzo entry flooring, zigzag and fluted fa?ade ornament, and decorative aluminum storefront design.

Current tenant and soon-to-be new owners, Blankspaces, envision an active co-working space that will generate welcome new foot traffic. Pasadena Heritage commends the new owners on their recognition of the potential of a distinctive historic building and its contribution to the renaissance happening along this segment of Colorado Blvd. We spoke in support of the nomination at last week's Historic Preservation Commission and will express the same support when the nomination is decided by the City Council in the coming weeks.
