Passing the Torch, 50 Years After Stonewall

On Saturday, June 1, the Cinema Arts Centre kicked off Pride Month honoring the 50 th anniversary of Stonewall with the Born This Way Celebration of Queer Arts and Culture and the MOSAIC LGBTQ+ Art Exhibition.

The guest of honor in this inclusive, inter-generational multidisciplinary queer visual and performing arts celebration was Stonewall Veteran and Long Island LGBTQ+ Poet Laureate, Rusty Rose. Rusty Rose, a Brooklyn-born poet, author, and playwright, has had her poetry anthologized in publications such as Sparrowgrass, Bards Initiative, Local Gems Press, The Poet’s Almanac, Suffolk County Poetry Review and Nassau Poets Association.  Rusty was deeply involved in the pioneering protests of the sixties and seventies for LGBT, Black, and Women’s civil rights. Her spoken word poem, Put the ‘T’ first, sheds light on the first night at the Stonewall Inn during the rebellion. Her poem, Squeezed a Blood Red is a response to the 2016 massacre at the Pulse nightclub, Orlando.
Presented by the Long Island Gay and Lesbian Film Festival and curated by local artist and teacher Anu Annam , the event began with a meet-the-artists reception and garden party. After the reception, a full slate of performances emceed by vivacious drag star Saline Dijon included Rusty Rose, Rorie Kelly , Olivia London, René Bouchard, Sentient Trash , Toni Homeperm, Brandon Ramirez, Jamski, Bri Oneisha, and Rainer Pasca, a 13-year-old out poet and rapper who energized the crowd with his speed-of-light, razor-sharp, unique rap style.

After the performances, Rusty Rose participated in a "Passing the Torch" ceremony honoring the next generation of LGBTQ+ trailblazers, including Brandon Ramirez, Kyle Montemurro, Rainer Pasca, Jane Olivia Remauro (Sentient Trash), Corey Richter, and Bri Onishea.

The MOSAIC LGBTQ+ Art Exhibition includes the work of Anu Annam, Rusty Rose, Billy Gotharts, Carole J. Amodeo, Con Artist, Eileen Thomas, Greg Fox, Joana O’Leary, Julia Thomasello, Kyle Montemurro, Michael Staffieri, Nicole Franz, Ratgrrl, Robert Stenzel, and Savanna Mayer

The MOSAIC LGBTQ+ Art Exhibition will be in the Cinema Arts Centre's gallery space until June 20th.

Special thanks to food sponsors: Butera's Restaurant , The Curry Club , Oaxaca , and special thanks for delicious desserts: gourmet cupcakes by Corey's Over the Rainbow and French macaroons by Cindy Hand Creations.

In a small peaceful town, zombies suddenly rise to terrorize the living residents. Now three bespectacled police officers and a strange Scottish morgue expert must band together to defeat the undead.

The citizens of the sleepy little town of Centerville find themselves under attack by flesh-eating zombies when the dead rise from their graves. The most starlit cast of zombies includes Adam Driver , Bill Murray , Selena Gomez , Chloë Sevigny , Steve Buscemi , Austin Butler , RZA , Tilda Swinton , Tom Waits , Danny Glover , Caleb Landry Jones , Rosie Perez, and Carol Kane .
