Meet Marcelina Leonis
Leonis Adobe Museum
Leonis Legacies is back, and in our newest episode, we're so pleased to introduce you to one of the children of the Leonis family.
Marcelina Leonis, daughter of Miguel and Espiritu Leonis, lived a short life, passing away at the age of 19 in 1880. While we do not know the cause of her death, we do have a small window into her life based on photographs and her personal possessions, which include a diary and a bible. There is nothing written revealing Miguel and Espiritu’s state of mind when Marcelina died, but Miguel commissioned a large and costly marble gravestone for his daughter. It is safe to assume the family was greatly affected by Marcelina’s death. She appears to have lived a privileged life, especially in comparison to other Native Americans of the period.
In this episode, join Historian and Curator Dinna Rivera-Pitt for a curator’s look at a few of Marcelina’s personal effects and learn more about this extraordinary family. Check it out on our YouTube, Instagram, or Facebook!
