20,000 Jobs Under the Sea

Hardhat (commercial) divers perform much of the underwater construction in the harbor. If you have ever crossed a bridge, fished from a pier, or even flushed a toilet, you have benefited from the work of commercial divers. A divers’ locker features authentic gear used in the Port of Los Angeles in the 20th century. An abalone fishing diorama reminds visitors that the once-plentiful abalone was harvested by Chinese and Japanese divers off the California coast. A life-size scene of a diver repairing a sewer is a testament to the importance of maintaining infrastructure so vital to our quality of life.

The Museum also has an extensive archive of commercial diving, donated by Torrance Parker. Visit the Online Archive of California for the finding aid.
