 Carl Howell, Witnessing History

Lanterman House

John Newcombe’s latest film documents the life and career of Carl Howell, who served as a Naval Aide to four presidents: Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, and Ford. Howell can be compared to a real-life Forrest Gump. Time and again, serendipitous events gave him a front-row seat to some of the most important events of the 1960s and 1970s. Enjoy this exclusive opportunity to view a privately made film.

No reservations are necessary; however, seating is limited to 50.

Our presenter for this program is local filmmaker John Newcombe. He will be showing his compilations of many scenes from CHiPS, Adam 12, Emergency, and other TV programs and movies filmed in our “backyard” on the under-construction freeways.

Arthur Haley, Forgotten Architect of Downtown LA

Lanterman House

This lecture by Lanterman House archivist Julie Yamashita will explore the career of Arthur L. Haley (1865-1925), architect of the 1915 Lanterman House. His career before this was full of projects instrumental in the development of downtown Los Angeles during the early twentieth century. Apartments, skyscrapers, business buildings, residential homes, and even an enormous theater were just some types of structures that Haley was asked to design. All these buildings were a preface to the modern conveniences that would later be seen in the Lanterman House, especially those relating to fire protection and air circulation.

No reservations are required; however, seating is limited

The exhibition examines the complex concept of home through these stories. How have these individuals defined home? What connections can be made between the turn of the century and today? Auschwitz. Not Long ago. Not far away.

Ronald Reagan Presidential Library

The exhibition brings together more than 700 original objects of great historic and human value, which were direct witnesses of the horrors of Auschwitz and the Holocaust. The Auschwitz exhibition portrays the complex reality of the notorious camp, the universal symbol of the human tragedies that resulted from Nazi ideology, and the world of victims and perpetrators with a clear goal – to elucidate how such a place could come into being and dig into how its existence has determined our present worldview. Most of these objects have never been shown to an audience on the West Coast before.
