A Note From Pastor Amy
By the word of the Lord the heavens were made,
their starry host by the breath of his mouth.
He gathers the waters of the sea into jars;
he puts the deep into storehouses.
Let all the earth fear the Lord;
let all the people of the world revere him.
For he spoke, and it came to be;
he commanded, and it stood firm.
(Psalm 33:6-9)
I am not an “outdoorsy” person. However, I have found myself drawn to nature more and more in recent years. I think some of it has to do with moving to Iowa from Texas and finally experiencing a true changing of the seasons. I stand in awe a little more often at an opening flower or the pale green of a budding tree. I appreciate a sunrise early in the morning and the twinkle of stars far away from city lights.
This is why I appreciate today. It is Earth Day. We take a moment and give thanks for our home and its awe inspiring beauty. God’s handiwork is quite spectacular and we have the immense pleasure of living here and enjoying it.
Of course on this day, we also remember our responsibility to care for this home. As the story in Genesis tells us, we are its stewards. We have a responsibility to co-exist with all creation, never exploiting for our own gain or abusing it at the expense of future generations or other species.
So, I encourage you as stewards of creation to celebrate Earth Day. You might even want to read a bit more about it. Click here for one blog giving more history and even ideas for how to celebrate at home.
May you have a blessed Earth day giving thanks to God!
Peace,
Pastor Amy
