ANNOUNCEMENTS

Once Upon an Advent | Advent Sermon Series

November 30December 28

This Advent season at Second Presbyterian, we’ll enter the story of Christmas through the wonder of stories themselves. Each week, we’ll listen for how God’s promises of hope, peace, joy, love, and light come to life in both Scripture and story, reminding us that the good news often begins with something small and unexpected. We’ll hear of hope that grows where others see only endings, peace that comes through gentleness and self-giving, joy that blossoms in compassion, and love that transforms even the hardest of hearts. On Christmas Eve, we’ll celebrate the light that shines in the darkness, and the week that follows will invite us to recognize Christ’s presence in everyday moments and simple acts of kindness.

Come and join us for Once Upon an Advent, a season to wonder, to wait, and to rediscover how God’s story is still being written in and among us.

Walmart Gift Card Collection for West End Center for Youth

During the month of November, the Service and Outreach Committee will be collecting Walmart gift cards to give to the West End Center to be included in the Christmas bags given to each child who is a part of their program.

The cards should be from Walmart in increments of $5 ($25 max). You can leave them in the box provided at the front desk on Sundays or in Meredith’s office during the week. Thank you, Second congregation, for your generous giving and for making the holidays brighter for youth in our city.

Eagle Scout Ice Cream Social

Sunday, Nov. 30 | 12:15 p.m. | Fellowship Hall

I am Madelyn Lyons, child of the church, and I’m excited to announce my Eagle Scout Service Project with Roanoke Wildlife Rescue. I will be rebuilding one of their outdoor raccoon enclosures to help provide a safer and improved habitat for the animals in their care.

I will be hosting an Ice Cream Social on Sunday, November 30th after the late worship service to help fund this project. There is no cost for entry, but donations are encouraged (cash preferred; Venmo accepted @madelyn_lyons). All funds raised will support the construction of the new enclosure, and any leftover donations will go directly to Roanoke Wildlife Rescue to help purchase food, medical supplies, and other essential items for the animals. Thank you for your support.

Advent Devotionals Available

The Presbyterian Outlook's 2025 Advent devotional, "Draw Near," is available for pickup at the welcome table in Kirk Hall for all who want one. The devotional includes artwork by two children of our church, Eleanor Link and Corinne Wilson. More copies will be printed as needed.

Wrapped and Ready to Roll

We’re excited to share an update on the first accomplishment of the Frank and Martha Clay Martin Fund for Youth. The 12-passenger van purchased at the end of summer—already serving our youth and church members on trips, retreats, and service projects—now features a brand-new Second Presbyterian-branded wrap!

The design beautifully blends our church’s tradition with a modern, eye-catching look that will represent Second Presbyterian throughout the community.

We’re grateful to the Martin Fund for making both the purchase and this upgrade possible, and to Invoke Design of Roanoke for their excellent work.

Photos below—come see the transformation!

A Solution for Unused Christmas Cards

Have extra or unused Christmas cards? Bring them to church and place them in the Jail Ministry box in the Coat Closet.

Beginning November 1st, as part of our Jail Ministry, the Service and Outreach Committee is collecting unused cards to share with chaplains at local jails. These cards will be given to incarcerated men and women so they can send messages to their loved ones this Christmas. Stamps will also be provided to help cover postage.

Thank you for helping share hope and connection this holiday season.

Theology on Tap

Tuesday, Dec. 2 | 6:00 p.m. | Twisted Track

Men of the church, you are invited to grab your favorite brew (craft, root, non-alcoholic, or otherwise), pull up a chair, and join us for Theology on Tap—a space where faith meets real life over good conversation and better company. No homework, no pop quizzes, no seminary degree required. Just bring your questions, your stories, and your appetite for deep truth. We’ll wrestle with big ideas, laugh at ourselves, and share stories. Because sometimes the holiest thing you can do on a Tuesday night is sip, share, and let theology spill over into the way you live.
