I am saddened to have to share some difficult news with you today. Almost two years ago, Ted Grueser, Trinity's Director of Missions, shared with Steve and me that he had cancer. He indicated at that point that he had already discontinued treatment, as it was not proving to be effective. Ted has now reached the point where, due to his declining health, he has made the decision to resign from his position at the end of February.
Here are Ted's own words about his ministry with Trinity and now his resignation:
Five and a half years ago, a friend told me about a job opening for the Director of Missions position here at Trinity. My friend said, "that job was created for you and your heart and passion for missions. I was not looking for a job at the time, but I agreed to apply and never dreamed I would hear anything. Lo and behold you hired me. The icing on the cake about moving to Gainesville was that there was a Grandy's close by. I want you to know that working at Trinity has been the best job I've ever had. I would go on to say, it has been my dream job!
During my time at Trinity I have been able to see hundreds of people be involved in missions of some sort. We have fed the hungry, provided clean water for communities, built homes for the homeless. I have had the greatest privilege of seeing how the people of Trinity are touching the lives of so many people around the world. Trinity is going beyond the walls of the church and living out what John Wesley said, "Do all the good you can...."
I am writing this letter to inform you of my intentions to step down from my position as Director of Missions here at Trinity. As you may be aware, my health is on the decline and it's making it difficult to continue on. My last day will be February 28th. St. Francis of Assisi, near the time of his death, prayed for his fellow friars: "I have done what is mine to do. May Christ teach you what is yours." Thank you so much for allowing me to be a part of the Trinity family and allowing me to share my love and passion for missions here at Trinity!
In His Service,
Ted and Danette and their boys, Riley and Deklan, will continue to reside in Gainesville and be a part of Trinity, and I know you join me in wanting to walk alongside all of them through this. As Ted and his family make us aware of tangible ways that we can support them, we will let you know. In the meantime, I encourage you to be in prayer for all of them as well as the extended family.
Kelly Ping, Trinity's Coordinator of Public Relations, has been working alongside and learning from Ted since last fall as the Associate Director of Missions. She has a passion for missions and previous employment experience working for a non-profit organization. The Staff Parish Relations Committee of Trinity has approved a plan for Kelly to begin transitioning into the role of Director of Missions beginning March 1, while we engage in a search for a Director of Communications.
