Dear friends,

Our beloved Cabby Tennis died early Saturday morning in his residence at Skyline. His funeral will be at Saint Mark’s Cathedral on Saturday February 28, 2026 at 10:30am, with a reception to follow in Bloedel Hall. He was preceded in death by his wife Hyde Tennis, and he is survived by his four children—Cabby III of Greece, Whiting and Anne of Seattle, and Molly of France. Please hold them in your prayers in the coming days.

Cabby served as IV Dean of Saint Mark’s Cathedral, 1970-1986. He was then elected in 1986 to serve as Bishop of Delaware, retiring at the turn of the millenium back to Seattle where he served as Assisting Bishop for the Diocese of Olympia for some twenty years. He also served as Dean Emeritus 2013-2021, assisting with pastoral care, funerals and occasionally presiding and preaching.

Cabby studied first to be a lawyer and later followed a calling to the priesthood. He served parishes in Portsmouth, VA and in Buffalo, NY, before being called in 1970 to be the Dean at Saint Mark’s. He was elected and consecrated the ninth Episcopal Bishop of Delaware in 1986 where he was active in social justice programs. Bishop Tennis served the national Episcopal Church as a member of the Committee on Sexual Exploitation, and the Joint Commission on Program Budget and Finance and was a member of the House of Bishops for nearly forty years. His work in mediation and conflict resolution spanned nearly a half century. In retirement he also served as a member of the Medical Quality Assurance Commission (WA state), the Committee on Public Legal Education and a mediator with the Dispute Resolution Center of King County. Bishop Tennis remained active in peace and justice efforts right to the end of his life.

Gratefully,

The Very Rev. Steven L. Thomason

Dean and Rector

Rest eternal grant to him, O Lord;

And let light perpetual shine upon him.

May his soul and the souls of all the departed,

through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

Almighty God, Father of mercies and giver of comfort:

Deal graciously, we pray, with all who mourn;

that, casting all their care on you,

they may know the consolation of your love;

through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Saint Mark’s Cathedral acknowledges that we gather on the traditional land of the first people of Seattle, the Duwamish People, who are still here, and we honor with gratitude the land itself and the life of all the Coast Salish tribes. [Learn more]
