Preorder now!

We are excited to announce that the new book Path of the Panther by Carlton Ward Jr., published by National Geographic, is coming to bookstores May 2nd and available for pre-order now!

Each page, each photograph, each story in this impassioned book brings us closer to the elusive Florida panther—the signature animal of the Sunshine State, the only big cat east of the Mississippi River, and an emblem of the challenges and successes of the Endangered Species Act. Once on the brink of extinction, the panther now has a delicate path to recovery, thanks in part to the conservation efforts of Carlton Ward Jr., who wrote and photographed this compelling illustrated narrative.

With a foreword by beloved Florida novelist Carl Hiaasen and special contributions by writers intimately familiar with the panther and its plight, this book will inspire everyone who loves the natural world and wants to see it thrive.

Driven to near extinction in the eastern United States, the Florida panther persists in the verdant terrain of the U.S. Everglades. The greatest challenge to this species derives from humans. As millions move into the Sunshine State and development chews up natural lands, reducing panther habitat.

National Geographic Explorer and photographer Carlton Ward Jr. has spent almost two decades advocating for the Florida Wildlife Corridor, a network of public and private land that can provide a lifeline for the panther. In this inspiring book, he and fellow writers introduce us to these wary, wonderful animals: the lives they lead, the threats they face, and the solutions Ward and other conservationists have initiated to help them survive.

Contributors to Path of the Panther include Douglas Main, Jeff Klinkenberg, Cynthia Barnett, Betty Osceola, Craig Pittman, Cary Lightsey and Tori Linder. Edited by Victoria Pope and designed by David Griffin.

The book is a mission tool of the Path of the Panther project and Wildpath. Thank you to National Geographic and Live Wildly for grant support that made the publication possible.
