Up to $1,200 More per Child for 1.6 Million Families across Canada
|
|
In the first four years since its implementation, the Canada Child Benefit (CCB) has helped lift nearly 435,000 children out of poverty. Families entitled to the CCB with children under the age of six can expect to receive a bit more money in the bank this year.
Families could receive up to $1,200 in support per child under the age of six in 2021. This will benefit about 1.6 million Canadian families and about 2.1 million children under the age of six.
The first payments were issued on May 28, 2021, which included both the January and April payments for those entitled to them. The final two payments will be issued on July 30 and October 29, 2021.
Families that already receive the CCB will not need to take any action to receive the payments. However, families do need to file their 2019 and 2020 tax returns to access them.

Study: Lone-Parent Families, Older People and People Living Alone More Likely to Remain in Low Income, 2018
|
|
Each year, some Canadians fall into low income, while others rise out of it. For example, over one-quarter (28.1%) of Canadians who were in low income in 2017 had exited it by 2018.
A study released by Statistics Canada examines the low-income exit rate in Canada—an indicator that can be used to track the amount of time it takes for people to rise out of low income.
Studies in Canada and around the world suggest that people living in low income over an extended period are disadvantaged in terms of life and health expectancies, and that this disadvantage may persist over time.
Key findings:
- Women and older tax filers stay in low income longer
-
Lone-parent families and people living alone are less likely to leave low income than couple families
- Immigrant tax filers who have lived in Canada longer are less likely to fall in low income
- Canadians are rising out of low income at a faster pace than they were five years earlier

Statistics Canada examined the characteristics of workers who were most and least likely to have received CERB payments in 2020.
Data indicated the following groups were more likely to receive CERB:
- Low-wage workers

- Workers in visible minority groups
- Women and youth in visible minority groups
