A Message from Our Executive Director,

Vickie Kaefer

As we welcome Fall, there is so much to celebrate at Pathways! Our new fiscal year began in July, and these past few months have been filled with opportunities to connect, build relationships, and strengthen the support that makes our work possible. I’m inspired by this community's generosity and our shared belief that we can make a meaningful difference in others' lives.

We are especially grateful for the recent generous support of the City of Bellflower, the City of Lakewood, the City of Paramount, the Community Hospital of Long Beach Foundation, the Earl B. and Loraine H. Miller Foundation, and the Freeman E. Fairfield Foundation. Their contributions help us continue to offer compassionate care and connection to the people and families we serve.

In this issue, we’re excited to share highlights from our Golf Tournament and Long Beach Gives. We’re also looking ahead to Light Up A Life in December, a meaningful opportunity to come together in remembrance and community.

Thank you for being part of the Pathways family and helping carry our mission forward.

Program Highlights

From the Desk of our Program Manager + Social Worker, Kaitlin Wood-Zacharias:

A Strong Start at Pathways

We’ve had a busy start to the Fall at Pathways, welcoming new students and interns while continuing to build strong partnerships with our university and community partners. This year, we are working with a new cohort of nursing students from California State University, Long Beach, along with five MSW interns and one undergraduate intern from CSULB and two MSW interns from California State University, Dominguez Hills. After completing their training and onboarding, our students and interns are already out in the field and in the community supporting Pathways' programs. Our Care Navigation clients especially enjoy their visits with our nursing students, who bring a valuable health-focused perspective and an opportunity for additional connection and support.

Our School Grief Support Program has also been busy preparing for the new school year. Our team has visited 50 schools across the four school districts we currently serve and participated in six back-to-school nights. We are continuing to connect with school counselors and social workers to learn about their needs and explore opportunities to support students through grief groups, grief talks, and workshops.

In Care Navigation, our team has been active throughout the community, participating in resource fairs in Paramount and Leisure World and attending the Long Beach Aging Services Collaborative meeting. We also celebrated Senior Center Month with visits to Weingart, Paramount, and Cerritos Senior Centers, where we enjoyed ice cream and cupcakes with community members. Our interns are now meeting with clients in person, helping connect them with community resources, providing support, and building meaningful relationships.

We’re grateful for the students, interns, schools, and community partners who help extend the reach of Pathways and allow us to continue connecting individuals and families with meaningful support and resources!
