November is National Hospice and Palliative Care Month: Honoring Compassion and Comfort

Each November, National Hospice and Palliative Care Month reminds us of the difference compassionate care makes for patients and families facing serious illness.

At Pathways Hospice, we believe no one should have to navigate these challenging moments alone. Our team of nurses, social workers, chaplains, volunteers and other professionals works together to ease pain, provide emotional and spiritual support, and help patients and families focus on what matters most.

We also want our community to understand that palliative care can provide comfort and symptom relief at any stage of a serious illness, even while treatment continues. Hospice care offers specialized support when the focus shifts to comfort rather than a cure.

For nearly five decades, Pathways has been honored to care for our neighbors throughout Northern Colorado. We encourage you to learn about these services and have conversations with loved ones about care preferences before a crisis occurs.

When you or someone you love needs guidance, comfort or support, Pathways is here to walk alongside you.

InTouch

From The President

Dear Friends,

November is National Hospice and Palliative Care Month, a time to recognize the compassionate professionals, volunteers and caregivers who make a meaningful difference in the lives of patients and families facing serious illness and loss. It is also an opportunity to increase awareness of the care and support available to our community.

Since the national observance began in 1978, hospice care has grown significantly, reaching more than 1.65 million people across the United States each year. This growth reflects an increasing understanding of the value of compassionate, whole-person care and the importance of supporting not only patients, but also the families and loved ones who walk alongside them.

At Pathways Hospice, we believe every person deserves care that honors their individual needs, wishes and goals. Our interdisciplinary team brings together skilled medical professionals, pain and symptom management, emotional and spiritual support, music therapy and volunteers to provide comfort and preserve quality of life. We also recognize that serious illness affects entire families. Through education, guidance and grief support, we help loved ones navigate caregiving and find support as they adjust to life after a loss.

It is equally important to understand that hospice and palliative care are not the same. Hospice care supports people nearing the end of life when curative treatment is no longer the goal. Palliative care, on the other hand, focuses on relieving pain and other symptoms and improving quality of life at any stage of a serious illness. It can be provided alongside treatments intended to cure or manage an illness.

One of the most important things you can do for yourself and those you love is to have conversations about health care wishes before a crisis occurs. Understanding your options and sharing your preferences can help ensure that future care reflects what matters most to you. We often hear families wonder why they waited so long to reach out to hospice. We hope that by continuing to share information and answer questions, we can help more people find the support they need when they need it.

For 48 years, Pathways Hospice has been honored to serve as your local, nonprofit, community-based hospice, caring for patients and families throughout the Greeley, Fort Collins and Loveland areas. The trust you place in us to care for your loved ones, friends and neighbors is something we never take for granted. It remains a privilege to walk beside our community through some of life's most meaningful and challenging moments.

During National Hospice and Palliative Care Month, thank you for your continued support and for helping us share the message that compassionate care, comfort and connection matter. If you or someone you love could benefit from hospice or palliative care, please reach out. We are here to listen, answer questions and help you understand your options.

With gratitude,

A Vintage Affair To Remember!

September 20, 2026 was an incredible evening at Pathways' A Vintage Affair fundraiser, held at Front Range Community College and presented by Wilbur’s Total Beverage! Featuring 200+ varieties of wine, beer, and whiskey from around the world, gourmet appetizers, a silent auction and more, thanks to the generosity of our amazing community, we raised more than $35,000 to support two vital Pathways programs:

  • The Dream Quilters, who create and donate 35–40 beautiful, handcrafted quilts each month for patients at Pathways Inpatient Care Center.

  • The Pathways Family Assistance Fund, which provides grants for hospice families facing urgent non-medical expenses such as food, travel, mortgage or rent, and more.

We are beyond grateful to everyone who attended, donated, and helped make this night such a success.

A huge thank-you to our generous sponsors for making this special evening possible!

Honoring Those Who Served

Recognizing Veterans on Veterans Day and Beyond

Each year on November 11, our nation comes together to celebrate Veterans Day—a time to honor the brave men and women who have served in the United States Armed Forces. At Pathways, this day holds special meaning. We are deeply grateful for the sacrifices veterans have made and are proud to provide compassionate, specialized care through our participation in the We Honor Veterans program.

Each veteran’s journey is different, and our team takes time to learn about every individual’s branch and era of service. This helps us provide care that is both personal and respectful, addressing the physical, emotional, and spiritual challenges veterans may face at the end of life.

A meaningful part of our care includes recognition ceremonies. When a new veteran joins our service, our volunteers honor them by presenting certificates, pins, and hats as a small token of gratitude for their service to our country. These heartfelt moments often lead to shared stories and connections that remind us all of the power of appreciation.

This Veterans Day—and every day—Pathways proudly salutes those who have served. We remain committed to honoring our veterans with the dignity, compassion, and respect they deserve.

Honoring Those Who Serve Others

A Career Built Around Mission: Angie Sickmon Reflects on 25 Years with Pathways

For Angie Sickmon (pictured on the right with her husband Darren), a career with Pathways was never simply about having a job. It was about finding an organization whose mission resonated deeply with her and becoming part of a team committed to making a difference.

Today, Angie serves as a Clinical Documentation Specialist at Pathways, but her journey with the organization has taken her through just about every corner of clinical care. Her path to Pathways began more than 30 years ago when she started her nursing career as an LPN, working primarily in long-term care. After moving to Colorado, she worked at North Shore, where she encountered the Hospice of Larimer County team, which later became Pathways.

“I just appreciated so much what they did,” Angie recalls. That experience inspired her to return to school to become an RN, with the goal of eventually becoming part of the organization she had admired.
