Spring 2026

April is National Volunteer Month:

Celebrating the Heart of Compassionate Care

This coming April is National Volunteer Month, a time to recognize the generous individuals who give their time and talents to strengthen communities across the country. At Pathways, volunteers are an essential part of the compassionate care we provide to patients and families facing serious illness.

For those we serve, volunteers offer far more than helping hands. They provide companionship, comfort, and moments of connection that can make an ordinary day feel brighter and less lonely.

From visiting with patients and supporting families to assisting with administrative work and special programs, Pathways volunteers extend the reach of our care in meaningful ways.

We are deeply grateful for every volunteer who shares their time, kindness, and heart with our community. This April, we invite you to join us in celebrating the remarkable people whose generosity helps ensure no one on this journey feels alone.

InTouch

From The President

Dear Friends,

As spring approaches, we like to take time to ensure we thank all of the people in our community who give their time to make our mission possible – these are our volunteers.

April is the month that Pathways celebrates the outstanding contributions of the many volunteers who support the care we provide.

The entire month of April is designated to recognize the contributions of volunteers around the country and, April 19 – 25 is National Volunteer Week in 2026. During this time, we will be celebrating the many hours and services that our more than 150 volunteers provide each year. In 2025, volunteers at Pathways provided more than 14,000 hours of direct patient care services.

Hospice volunteers play an indispensable role in enabling hospice and palliative care organizations to offer the highest-quality care and support possible for the people they serve. By sharing their time, energy, and expertise, volunteers bring compassion and caring to the lives of those in need.

In fact, we owe our beginnings to volunteers who saw as need and stepped up to provide necessary care and support to a woman in Larimer County was dying of cancer. This was in 1978 that a small group of women rallied together, volunteered their time, and cared for her in the final months of her life. That act of loving kindness became the seed of what is now Pathways.

Nearly five decades later, we are still here. Still shaped by that founding spirit. Still caring for Northern Colorado residents regardless of financial circumstance. Still doing the work all of these women believed was worth doing.

On behalf of our Board of Directors and our professional team members, I want to thank all our volunteers for their dedication to the mission of Pathways hospice. We could not fulfill this mission without you.

Honoring 22 Years of Compassion

Thank You, Pat DesJardin!

After more than two decades of service, longtime Pathways volunteer Pat DesJardin has retired, leaving behind a legacy of compassion, presence, and human connection.

Pat joined Pathways after retiring from a 40-year career as an educator and coach, looking for a meaningful way to give back. Inspired by a conversation with his physician son, he became a hospice volunteer—and stayed for 22 years.

During that time, Pat provided companionship and support to hospice and palliative patients, often forming deep bonds. He learned to listen more than he spoke, to meet people where they were, and to personalize each visit—whether that meant reading a hometown newspaper, learning chess, bringing a favorite meal, or taking a scenic drive.

“I have footprints on my heart from the people I have seen,” Pat says of his experience.

From being asked to speak at funerals to helping fulfill meaningful wishes, Pat’s service touched countless lives. Now 86, he is marking his second retirement, and while his volunteer chapter may be closing, his impact will long remain.

We are profoundly grateful for Pat’s dedication and heart. Thank you, Pat, for 22 extraordinary years of service to Pathways and the patients and families we serve.

Pat's story was recently featured in Fifty & Better Magazine

Recognizing Exceptional Care and Leadership

Happy National Doctor’s Day to Our Pathways Physicians

Happy National Doctor's Day on March 30th to two physicians who show up for some of the most sacred moments in medicine — and do it with extraordinary care.

Pathways’ very own Dr. Nate Chappelle and Dr. Julie Davita-Bailey bring more than clinical expertise to our hospice and palliative services. They bring presence, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to the patients and families living through some of life's most profound transitions.

We are deeply grateful for their leadership and for the way they pour themselves into this work every single day.

Thank you, Dr. Chappelle and Dr. Davita-Bailey. Pathways is better because of you.
