Program Equips Probationers with Tools to Survive & Thrive

We are delighted to share exciting news from Michigan Works! West Central: The launch of the Probationer Pilot Program throughout all of Region 4. In partnership with the Michigan Department of Corrections, we officially kicked off the program March 1, marking a significant expansion of our OS Reentry Services program to now include probationers.

Through this initiative, we are equipping probationers with the essential tools they need to thrive and succeed. Recognizing the importance of personalized support in navigating the difficulties of reintegration, we are committed to addressing the unique needs of each individual. By doing so, we aim to dismantle barriers and pave the way for a brighter future.

In just the first two weeks following the program's launch, we have already received an impressive 15 referrals for probationers! This early response speaks volumes about the program's potential impact and underscores the growing momentum behind these efforts.

As we continue to forge ahead, we anticipate a steady increase in referrals, further solidifying the program's importance and relevance in our communities and ultimately across the state.

Breaking Down Barriers

In a society that often stigmatizes those who have been incarcerated, the journey back into society can be daunting for returning citizens. Yet, amidst the challenges, there are beacons of hope in the form of Economic Stability Providers, who assist OS Reentry participants in not just finding a job, but in building a stable and fulfilling life after release.

Economic Stability Providers play a pivotal role in breaking down barriers for OS Reentry Participants by offering vital resources and support. The providers ensure individuals transitioning from the criminal justice system have access to employment opportunities, financial literacy programs, higher education, skilled trades and more.

By addressing economic needs, they empower participants to rebuild their lives and become self-sufficient members of society. Through collaborative efforts with community organizations and government agencies, Economic Stability Providers create pathways for OS Reentry Participants to overcome challenges and achieve long-term success, ultimately fostering safer communities and reducing recidivism rates. Housing Choice Vouchers

What They Are, and How They Can Help

Michigan is recognizing the critical role stable housing plays in reducing recidivism rates. The Michigan Department of Corrections (MDOC) and Michigan Housing Development Authority (MSHDA) have collaborated to extend the benefits of the Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) program to individuals reentering society after incarceration. Parolees who meet the eligibility criteria can access these vouchers.

The HCV program serves as a powerful tool in dismantling barriers for these individuals. The extension of this program to parolees not only provides access to stable housing, but also fosters a supportive environment conducive to successful reintegration. By addressing housing challenges, the collaboration between MDOC and MSHDA demonstrates a commitment to supporting the rehabilitation and reintegration of individuals reentering society, ultimately fostering safer and more inclusive communities across Michigan.

To date, Region 4 has had 45 individuals receive a voucher, we have 31 still in their rental units, 18 more in the process of receiving a voucher.

After 39 Years Behind Bars, Man Steps into New Apartment with Help of HCV Program

After an astounding 39 years behind bars, Charles Davis' reentry into society was met with both excitement and trepidation. Having entered the system at the tender age of 22, Charles had spent nearly four decades removed from the everyday nuances of life outside the prison walls. Upon his release, he was referred to the OS Reentry Program, where a new chapter of his life could begin.

With the support of the OS Reentry Program, Charles found himself equipped with the necessary tools and resources to navigate the challenges of reintegration. With the help of his Resource Navigator, he was approved for the Housing Choice Voucher Program (HCV), marking a pivotal moment as he stepped into his very own apartment for the first time.

For Charles, the experience was nothing short of transformative. As he marveled at the solitude of his own bathroom, he couldn't help but chuckle at the realization it was all his - a luxury he had long forgotten. Simple tasks, such as operating a stove or discerning the source of an unfamiliar sound, became opportunities for learning and growth. In one memorable instance, he mistook the ringing doorbell for an alarm, prompting a good-natured call to his OS Resource Navigator for guidance.

Reflecting on his journey, Charles' story serves as a poignant reminder of the little things we often take for granted. His resilience and determination in the face of adversity inspire us to cherish the freedoms and comforts we so easily overlook. As we celebrate his triumphs, let us also recognize the invaluable support systems that empower individuals like Charles to reclaim their lives and thrive.
