The Deeper Side of Health and Wellness
This is a great topic for 2024 and I want to offer some tips from the National Institute of Mental Health in the article, “Caring for Your Mental Health.
The tips in the article are:
- Get regular exercise.
- Eat healthy, regular meals and stay hydrated.
- Make sleep a priority.
- Try a relaxing activity
- Set goals and priorities.
- Practice gratitude.
- Focus on positivity.
- Stay connected.
I am not elaborating on these, because I think there is a much more fundamental issue underneath all of this. And that is our mental state of mind, our emotional health, the way we think, our self talk, and our attitude.
This has been a very tough time to see positive outcomes and paint positive pictures. However, if we don’t understand and work with our emotional health, it is difficult for the activities listed above to apply because we may not truly believe what we are doing. The analogy is the foundation of a house that is not strong enough to build a sustainable, supportive structure.
One of the reasons that I have practiced positive thinking and interviewed thousands of people who have overcome obstacles, transformed problems into solutions, and survived horrific activities and survived and thrived, is because it has helped me to adapt and believe in a mindset that has led me to move forward.
Here is what has helped me most in nurturing my mental health as I practice the tips mentioned above by the National Institute of Mental Health. I pay attention and listen to the stories I tell myself and the interpretations I make and question them and validate the facts of the situation. It is so easy to catastrophize and draw conclusions based on the past not the present.
Having said that, I think it is important to look at the past as it gives us important information, but totally basing our next course of action on what has transpired in the past, limits our vision to clean the slate and see a different outcome within the present circumstances.
Here’s to hearing and dealing with our inner voices to lead us to caring for our mental health and positive outcomes!
Happy New Year!
