Positively Speaking: Patricia's Perspective

The Power of Self-Awareness and Self-Care
During Uncertainty
We are starting the New Year of 2022 with an acceleration of COVID, specifically the Omicron variant. Many of us thought we would be farther along in our progress to combat this virus, especially with vaccines and boosters available to most.
Self-care especially during this time of uncertainty can help us feel connected, safe and hopeful. Exercise is essential especially as it releases serotonin in the brain, the positive endorphins which give a us natural high, an emotional boost and energy for both our body and brain. Maintaining a healthy diet is a also crucial component to keeping your energy levels high, improving brain function, and warding off diseases. Sleep is another key factor in health and wellness. It allows your body and mind to recharge, helps the body remain healthy and helps the brain to function properly. Deep breathing is another component in wellness, relaxation and stress relief .It has been scientifically proven to affect the heart, the brain, digestion and the immune system. Prayer helps us stay connected and safe. Physician and researcher Larry Dossey, M. D., in his book "Prayer is Good Medicine," discusses how praying for oneself and others can have a scientifically measurable healing effect on illness and trauma.
In the article 7 Elements of a Truly Healthy Life in thriveglobal.com, author Marwan Jarmal lists the components of health which extend beyond the physical side. They are Physical health, mental health. family health. financial health. vocational health, social health and spiritual health.
As we start the New Year, let us all reflect on all aspects of our health, what we have and what we really desire for 2022. All material desires can be traced back to the essence of what we really want. Those core elements include. safety, connection, hope, freedom, creativity, recognition, self-reliance, and love.
Happy New Year family, friends and colleagues!
