July has arrived! The heat of summer is here. July is a jubilant month, doubling as National Blueberry, Picnic, and Ice Cream Month as well as a time to celebrate our country's independence. July's birth flowers are the larkspur and the water lily. Both of these flowers represent growth, rebirth, beauty, success, and royalty. The birthstone for July is the ruby, symbolizing nobility, purity, and passion. The long warm days of July provide the opportunity to get outside and soak up the sun.

Gail Sahar
The Psychology of America's Culture War
Gail Sahar, professor of psychology at Wheaton College, is the author of Blame and Political Attitudes: The Psychology of America's Culture War, her latest novel about the blame-placing tendencies of American politics. After earning her Ph.D. from UCLA, she went on to research the effects of causal perceptions on political attitudes for over 30 years.
Her latest work demonstrates that the current emphasis on value differences, such as between conservatives and liberals in the U.S., ignores commonalities in the way people think about issues. She proposes that focusing on perceived causes of social problems is a much more promising avenue for dialog than trying to reconcile fundamental belief systems.
Gail will discuss her novel as well as provide a fresh perspective on how to change political attitudes.

Positively Speaking: Patricia's Perspective

How to Be Happy
Happiness has always been an interest of mine since the media and training work I do is about finding joy, happiness, the opportunity in the obstacle and the solutions to the problem.
I recently visited the Happiness Museum in Copenhagen Denmark, a small museum about the big things in life. The Happiness Museum is created by The Happiness Research Institute, a think tank focusing on well-being, happiness and quality of life. Check it out.
Here are seven steps to increase your happiness quotient:
1. Focus on what you can control
We cannot change things out of our control, but we can change our attitude about them. There are things we can do such as support what we believe, volunteer and offer assistance for a cause, but ultimately we don't make the final decision. When we can alleviate doubt and do what we can do within our control, it makes life easier and happier.
2. Let go of Resentment
Resentment has the potential to prevent relationships from moving forward. Although some people thrive on resentment because it makes them feel powerful and feel vindicated, it most often prevents relationships from moving forward and it continually brings negativity into the sphere of the person feeling it. Letting go of grudges and bitterness can make way for improved health and peace of mind. Forgiveness can lead to Healthier relationships.
3. Give of yourself
There is a joy in giving especially when it is something you love to do and you know it will bring joy to others. Whether the gift is intrinsic or extrinsic, the effect is often the same for both the giver and the receiver.
4. Express Gratitude
The more grateful we are for what we have, the more opportunity we have to bring abundance into our lives. When we are always seeking next expectation we sometimes miss what is in front of us. Appreciating what we have can bring some more joy into our lives and at the same time moving towards our goals brings us joy as well. It is a balancing act.
5. Don't compare to others
We see comparisons everywhere. All of us have strengths as well as challenges. We can proactively work towards something we want which others may have already achieved. The key here is to move forward and not stay stuck in a comparison thinking loop so that we can move forward
6. Appreciate the gifts in your life
We often take for granted what we have and the gifts we have been given, When we take the time to focus on what we have by remembering andhonoring our strengths and gifts through connecting with old friends, telling our stories, and having celebrations, we bring all of these gifts into the forefront again.
7. Live life to the fullest
Having a purpose helps us prioritize your life, gives you meaning, simplifies your life, focuses your energy and motivates you, It can also promote physical health, mental health, and happiness and could be a key to healthy aging.
