KDS Kicks Off Centennial Celebration
Kate Duncan Smith DAR School will be celebrating 100 years in 2024, and the 131st NSDAR Continental Congress was the official kick-off!

KDS DAR School was opened in 1924 by the Alabama Society DAR in an effort to provide an exceptional education steeped in patriotic values for the children of a rural area of the state. The Alabama Daughters were joined in their efforts by the National Society in 1928 with the passing of a resolution urging societies at large to cooperate with the state society of Alabama in its efforts to enlarge the school and increase its usefulness.

Track is Underway
KDS DAR School is pleased to share that after years of serious structural issues and incorrectly constructed dimensions, the school’s track is being demolished to make way for a new state-of-theart track and field complex.

The KDS DAR School track, which was constructed in 2006 along with the football stadium, was in a terrible state of disrepair. During construction, the base was not properly compacted, resulting in large cracks all along the track's surface. The crackling was so severe it rendered the track virtually unstable.

Continental Congress 2022
Kate Duncan Smith DAR School was honored to be part of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution's 131st Continental Congress, held June 29th - July 3rd, in Washington, D.C. and in-person for the first time since 2019. KDS Executive Director Heather Green; Board Chair Cheryl Harrison; and six KDS student representatives enjoyed a busy week of meeting with Daughters from across the country and throughout the world to share with them the story of KDS, the “Gem of Gunter Mountain.”

NSDAR Provides Funds for KDS Needs
During the DAR Education Luncheon at Continental Congress on Friday, July 1st, gifts from the Friends of DAR Schools Fund were presented by National Chair Morgan Lake, with KDS receiving $18,000 for the Elementary School Fine Arts Enrichment Program and $26,220 for the exterior restoration of the Pennsylvania Log Cabin.

Junior Members Shine a Light on KDS Projects
A highlight of Continental Congress each year is certainly the Junior Membership Committee Luncheon. This year’s event was no exception.
