NATCA Hosts Its 2018 Corporate Partner Event

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

NATCA hosted its fifth annual reception on Dec. 3 to thank its corporate partners. Our corporate partnership program was revitalized in 2010, when we had one premium corporate member and eight standard corporate members. The program has grown, and corporate membership has increased each year. Currently, NATCA has 40 premium members and 26 standard members.

Members of the National Organizing Committee and NATCA National Office Staff at the reception

National Organizing Committee Chairman John Bratcher thanked the partners for working with NATCA. "You are enhancing the National Airspace System (NAS) and making NATCA members work-life better," he told the more than 80 attendees. "Without the relationship NATCA has with these organizations, the aviation system would not be what it is today."

At the reception, Paul thanked the corporate partner representatives and highlighted their importance, especially at NATCA conferences like Communicating For Safety (CFS). CFS has grown every year, and controllers and aviation safety professionals get to interact with NATCA's corporate partners and give real-time input on projects, and are able to talk with them about current issues in aviation.

NATCA's corporate partners join our Union in advocating for the safety and efficiency of the NAS. We thank them for being a part of the NATCA family, helping us advance the NAS and making our daily lives better.

In Paul's remarks to attendees, he referenced visits to see several Canadian ATC facilities run by NAV CANADA, and talked about their relationship with air traffic controllers and aviation professionals, particularly being able to develop equipment in a very short time.

NAV CANADA representative Rob Cook told the audience that it is a pleasure to work alongside NATCA. "Instead of saying what can we do for our members, NATCA says what can we do for the NAS?" Rob said. "How can we make it safer? What can we do to make it better? It's a tribute to the way NATCA does business."

Also during the reception, Trish spoke to attendees about the NATCA Charitable Foundation (NCF). NCF works to find organizations and communities throughout the country where NATCA can make a difference, normally assisting smaller groups that are not as well known, are underserved, and don't have the vast funding that larger organizations do. At the event, attendees stuffed almost 200 backpacks for homeless veterans in the Washington, D.C. area. NATCA is giving these backpacks to the United Soldiers and Sailors of America, who work with homeless shelters providing assistance to veterans.

NATCA would like to thank each corporate partner for their dedication and leadership in the aviation industry. Your collaboration continues to help make our skies safer daily.

In Solidarity,

Paul and Trish

Disaster Relief Fund Is Helping our Brothers and Sisters in Alaska

The Nov. 30 earthquake that struck near Anchorage caused significant damage in the Eagle River community. NATCA's Disaster Response Committee (DRC)  has been in contact with five members, who reported damage to their houses, four of which live in Eagle River.

The DRC purchased and committed resources to three of the five members that we have been in contact with since the earthquake. The DRC will continue to monitor and follow-up with NATCA facility contacts until we are satisfied that all members' needs have been accounted for following this disaster.

These members have widespread water damage, caused by bursting pipes which subsequently flooded basements and lower levels of their houses. All members in this area have damage to glass fixtures in their houses, such as windows, mirrors, and glass doors. Due to the near constant aftershocks and initial 7.0 earthquake, there is extensive drywall damage and structural damage throughout the region.

The quake also caused damage to several of our facilities, including at Anchorage Center (ZAN, shown in these photos).  ZAN NATCA FacRep Rob Kindred said, "Two different water lines broke on the second floor; one directly above a couple sectors and the other above the (training lab). There are tarps hanging to divert the water to the floor and try and save the equipment. Our staff support area is in pretty rough shape from all the water damage and ceiling tiles that fell out."

There was media coverage of the ATC angle to the quake on both CNN and  Alaska Public Radio.
PWK Member Receives a Personal and Heartwarming Thank You from Pilot After Save

Our members do great work and take satisfaction in knowing that when emergencies happen, pilots and their passengers get to walk away safely and go home to their families. Last Thursday, a pilot came to Chicago Executive Airport (PWK) to thank one of our members  in person, the day after his twin-engine Cessna with a malfunctioning front landing gear completed an emergency landing safely. Local Chicago media captured the moment on video .

It was a heartwarming moment in the lobby of the tower at Chicago Executive Airport (PWK) when the thankful pilot, Vartan Seferian, met the air traffic controller, NATCA PWK member Shad Curtis, who assisted him.

Pictured below, from left to right: Seferian, his passenger Howard Norber, and Curtis.

This incident reminds us not only of the incredible work our members are doing every day to ensure the safety of the NAS, but also that there are just over five months left until our April 30, 2019 deadline for nominations for the 15th Annual Archie League Medal of Safety Awards. They will be presented on Sept. 18, 2019 at our annual awards banquet at Communicating For Safety (CFS) in Las Vegas. CFS will be Sept. 16-18, 2019. New IT Leadership Seeks Your Input and Ideas

The Information Technology Committee (ITC) met at the National Office on Nov. 26. Paul participated in part of the meeting and joined the committee in expressing enthusiasm for the ITC moving forward and pursuing the state-of-the-art technology and very best communication methods to advance the goals of our Union in the most effective and efficient manner.

The ITC ensures that NATCA's IT resources are used to their fullest potential. This includes the natca.org website, NATCA's social media channels, our email accounts, the Union's membership database and grievance tracker system, file storage and sharing systems, and much more. The ITC also develops policies for IT resources, which are submitted to NATCA's National Executive Board for adoption and implementation.

The ITC welcomes your insight, feedback, and ideas. What do you think of NATCA's current IT systems and communications? What are areas we can improve? How can we better meet your needs and ensure you are receiving the high level of IT services you deserve? Let us know how we are doing by sending an email to itc@list.natca.net.

The NATCA Portal: Take Control of Your Member Experience

The NATCA Portal is the entry point for our NATCA membership directory as well as the way to sign up for 2019 NATCA Academy classes, retirement seminars, and more.

Most importantly, the Portal allows you to do two key things: Update your contact information (mailing address, phone numbers, email address), and find your membership number which gives you access to the Portal itself and the members side of the natca.org website.
  • Click here to retrieve your NATCA membership number.
  • Click here if you've been to the NATCA Portal before but cannot remember your password.
Remember, your NATCA membership number is your username for both the NATCA Portal and the members side of the natca.org website. Your password is the same for both the Portal and the members side of the natca.org website as well.

We are continuously adding key features to the NATCA Portal and we encourage all members to become familiar with the Portal. We stand ready to assist if needed! Click here if you have a question.
