The Practice of lighting Advent candles is designed to help us center our lives on Christ's coming during the weeks that lead up to the celebration of his birth. One candle is lit each Sunday during Advent until all the candles are lit. As you light this Sunday's candle read the prayers and scripture reading below.

P A U S E

Today we light the candle of Joy

One:   We are getting closer and closer to the manger
All:    To worship and adore the newborn King
One:  We light the candle of hope to remind ourselves of God’s hope for each of us.
(light the hope candle again)
All:    We light the candle of peace and share the ways we practiced peace ___________.
(light the peace candle again invite each person to share a way they practiced peace this week)
One:   Today we light the candle of joy (light the third candle)
All:    When hope is real and peace is practiced the joy of the Lord is present
One:   God’s joy will come to us in a most unexpected way – a baby to be our Savior.
All:    Our Advent journey continues and we soon we’ll welcome the One who brings great joy!

P O N D E R

Read: With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation. And you will say in that day: Give thanks to the Lord, call on his name; make known his deeds among the nations; proclaim that his name is exalted. Isaiah 12:3-4 (NRSV)

What is it about God that brings you so much joy you want to share it with everyone you meet during this Advent journey?
  P R A Y
