The Practice of lighting Advent candles is designed to help us center our lives on Christ's coming during the weeks that lead up to the celebration of his birth. One candle is lit each Sunday during Advent until all the candles are lit. As you light this Sunday's candle read the prayers and scripture reading below.

Today we light the candle of Hope

One:   It’s time! It’s time to begin our journey toward the manger once again
All:    Where angels sing and shepherds adore.
One:   God comes to us in the most unexpected ways
All:    We, too, want to worship the Christ child
One:   Today we light the candle of hope. (light the first candle)
All:    We hope to see Jesus on our journey
One:   For Jesus brings hope to the world and to us.
All:    It’s time! It’s time for us to begin our Advent journey.

Read: Israel, trust the Lord! He is always merciful, and he has the power to save you . Psalm 130:7 (CEV)

For what do you hope this Advent season?

God of steadfast love, open our eyes that we may recognize Jesus in the faces we see and the places we visit during our Advent journey. In Christ’s name we pray, Amen.
