Principal's Message

I would like to invite parents to a special meeting to discuss traffic safety at Los Perales on
February 15th @ 9:00. I would like to gather feedback and create a committee to focus on traffic safety.

Drop-off and Pick-up Safety Reminders:
FOLLOW TRAFFIC RULES and BE SAFE:
  • Students MUST get out on the curbside only; NO EXCEPTIONS!
  • Adults must STAY in your car
  • ALWAYS pull as far forward as possible before stopping to allow your children to disembark.  Once they are out of the car, pull away as soon as it is safe to do so in order to make room for others behind you.
  • DO NOT PASS
  • Please do not plan play-dates, activities, review/complete homework while dropping your child off
  • Please pay attention and exercise caution while driving through the walkway across the parking lot.  Our kids do use that crossing area and must be given the right of way.
  • The parking lot is for staff parking or short-term visitor parking.  Please do not park in staff designated spaces, ever! Park in visitor spots only!  If there are no visitor spots, park on the street.

I look forward to working as a team in order to improve the safety of the students at Los Perales!

Have you heard about The Blue Crew at LP?

The Blue Crew has been busily working at LP, during recess snack time and lunchtimes to help make sure that our school is properly recycling or composting any waste or leftover food which kids might have at school. The name Blue Crew is fitting for this team because e very action we take impacts our oceans, and the team is trying to keep those oceans blue!   This week, the crew completed a trash audit with the help of Allied Waste. A follow up audit will be conducted again in a month or so, to see how much progress is being made. Coming up next month, the Blue Crew will be kicking off a fundraiser to help raise funds to purchase three stream bins for our school to help continue our journey to doing a better job at recycling, composting and trash sorting. One way in which you, as a parent can help is by sending snacks and lunches in reusable containers, rather than disposable containers each day.  This dramatically reduces the amount of waste and the impact on our Earth. Thank you for your support of this effort at school!

Anyone still hoping for a Spring Dodgeball Event?

We are in need of volunteers to be in charge of this event, as we hope to keep this fun tradition alive at LP. But at this point, we are not sure if we will be able to have a 2018 Dodgeball evening... so please grab a friend and sign-up to step-up to help out!

Email us at [email protected] to volunteer.

4th/5th Grade Book Club TODAY

Today (January 31st) we are meeting at lunch to discuss the "Book Scavenger" by Jennifer Chambliss Bertman, an exciting mystery full of puzzles and secret codes. We might even try to solve our own secret codes.
And we will chose our next book - check in at the library if you miss the book club to find out which book we will read next. The next book club meeting will be on Wednesday, March 28th.

For questions - please contact Anna Maguire 510-735-4879

The LP PTA will be hosting a Movie Night on Friday, February 9th from 6:00 - 8:30pm!
Come watch Moana with your friends!

The kids enjoy a supervised movie in the Oak Room with pizza, popcorn and drinks, and you enjoy a night out for only $15/child!   Unfortunately, no non-LP siblings allowed for insurance purposes.  Tickets can be purchased at Membership Toolkit.

From Walt Disney Animation Studios comes "Moana," a sweeping, CG-animated feature film about an adventurous teenager who is inspired to leave the safety and security of her island on a daring journey to save her people. Inexplicably drawn to the ocean, Moana convinces the mighty demigod Maui to join her mission, and he reluctantly helps her become a wayfinder like her ancestors who sailed before her. Together, they voyage across the open ocean on an action-packed adventure, encountering enormous monsters and impossible odds, and along the way, Moana fulfills her quest and discovers the one thing she's always sought:
her own identity.

Please also consider volunteering at Movie Night!
Please Sign-up HERE! We love our volunteers!!

ISO: Yearbook Photos!!!

The yearbook is underway and we need photos! Hundreds of photos, thousands of photos, millions of photos!

We want every child to be represented in the yearbook, so please consider sending in pictures of your child at school, the Fun Run, Variety Show, Halloween parade, spirit assemblies, field trips and holiday parties. We would also really love pictures from special events (Native American Day, Immigration Day, etc.)

Please title your emails to help us organize photos. Even simple titles such as "Mrs. Pearce Kindergarten" or "4th grade field trip" would be great.

Send photos (highest resolution possible) to Brenna Butler at [email protected]

Join us for an engaging evening of learning as Merve Lapus, Director of Professional Services at Common Sense Media, will speak on Ways to Have Critical Family Conversations About Balancing Digital Life, Managing Apps and Staying Positive on Social Media. He will share eye-opening videos and statistics from surveys of more than 2,600 8-18 year-olds and over 1,800 parents, and lead us in a discussion about strategies for tackling the parenting issues surrounding devices and digital life.

In his presentation, Merve will focus on tips and suggestions for how families can address important issues of handling media and technology. He will introduce us to Common Sense Media's Connecting Families webpage, which offers tools to open up great conversations about tough topics like Cyberbullying, Video Games and the Internet. Since SRVUSD uses Common Sense Media as the main resource to teach digital citizenship lessons in all our schools, parents will get a closer look at the messages and instructions that our kids receive in class. For more information on the digital citizenship curriculum, please check out the  SRVUSD Digital Citizenship Website.

From the Library

This week we continue discussing the 2017 books from the LP library that are on the ballot for the 2018 LP Mock Caldecott award.  It is great to hear the students share and discuss their viewpoints and opinions on the technique, mood, theme, text and illustrations of the books.  They shared some very insightful thoughts on the books we read last week.  This week we will be reading  Here We Are: Notes For Living on Planet Earth by Oliver Jeffers, Muddy: The Story of Blues Legend Muddy Waters written by Michael Mahin and illustrated by Evan Turk,  Robinson by Peter Sis,  Dazzle Ships written by Chris Barton and illustrated by Victo Ngai and  Why Am I Me? written by Paige Britt and illustrated by Sean Qualls & Selina Alko.
