RISHI GUPTA EARNS A 36 ON THE ACT

Rishi Gupta, a St. Luke’s student since K3, has achieved a remarkable academic milestone by earning a 36 on the ACT. This outstanding accomplishment places him among an elite group of students nationwide. Only 0.2% of ACT test-takers earn a 36, and in a typical year, just 3,000–4,000 students out of approximately 1.4–1.8 million achieve this distinction.

Rishi’s dedication, hard work, and commitment to excellence have truly paid off. His journey at St. Luke’s reflects years of academic growth, curiosity, and perseverance.

Congratulations, Rishi, on this incredible achievement! We are proud to celebrate your success and look forward to all that you will accomplish next.

ST. LUKE'S BAND DELIVERS OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE

Recently, St. Luke’s Concert Band delivered an outstanding performance at the Alabama Bandmasters Association Music Performance Assessment (MPA) held at Baker High School!

The purpose of MPA is to provide bands with the opportunity to perform for a panel of qualified adjudicators and receive detailed feedback on both their concert performance and sight-reading abilities. Bands are evaluated by three concert adjudicators and one sight-reading adjudicator, making strong performances in both areas a true mark of excellence.

BRIGHT SMILES AHEAD: STUDENTS LEARN THE IMPORTANCE OF BRUSHING THEIR TEETH

As part of their Biomedical Science outreach, second-grade students recently received a fun and educational lesson on dental health from Presley Jackson and Ally Grace Lowell. During their visit, Presley and Ally Grace taught the students about the importance of brushing their teeth and the proper steps for maintaining a healthy smile.

The lesson began with an important first step—washing your hands—before brushing your teeth. They then explained how to properly brush to remove food and plaque and keep teeth clean and healthy.

To make the lesson interactive, each student received a disclosing tablet, which temporarily stained their teeth blue. This hands-on activity helped demonstrate where plaque can remain on teeth and showed students how long they need to brush to get their teeth fully clean.

The second graders enjoyed the engaging activity while learning valuable habits that will help them keep their smiles bright and healthy!

SPEECH & DEBATE SUCCESS AT STATE COMPETITION

Members of St. Luke’s Speech and Debate team recently traveled to Tuscaloosa to compete in the Speech and Debate State Competition. A special congratulations goes to Evelyn Cummings, who placed first in Humorous Interpretation, earning a spot to compete at the National Speech and Debate Tournament in Richmond, Virginia, this summer. This impressive achievement highlights Evelyn’s talent, preparation, and strong performance at the state level. In addition to her first-place finish, Evelyn was also selected as Alabama’s 2026 Student of the Year for Speech and Debate. She has further been honored with the Alabama District nomination for the National Student of the Year for Speech and Debate, with the national selection to be announced later this summer.

Congratulations to Evelyn and to all of our St. Luke’s Speech and Debate team members who competed at the state level. We are proud of the way you represented St. Luke’s!

AUTHOR INSPIRES OUR YOUNG READERS

Second-grade students recently enjoyed a special visit from local author Elizabeth Frost, who shared her love of storytelling and writing. During her visit, Frost read the first few chapters of her book, Allie Gets Lost, capturing the students’ attention as they followed along with the story.

After the reading, students had the opportunity to ask questions and learn more about both the book and the journey of becoming an author. Frost spoke about the writing process, what it takes to publish a book, and the importance of creativity and perseverance.

Frost has lived in Mobile since 1991 and retired in 2024 after a career as an attorney working for the federal government. She shared with students that she originally wrote a draft of Allie Gets Lost more than 30 years ago. After rediscovering the story, she made it a goal to complete it and ultimately self-published the book in October 2025.

The visit was a wonderful opportunity for students to see how stories come to life and to be inspired to create their own!

MR. BOX TAKES THE STAGE IN 1776

St. Luke’s history teacher Mr. Mike Box recently showcased his talents beyond the classroom by performing in the musical 1776 at the Chickasaw Theatre. In the production, he played John Hancock, President of the First Continental Congress—an especially fitting role for someone who brings American history to life for his students every day.

Mr. Box’s passion for the U.S. Constitution and American government is evident both on stage and in the classroom. After a distinguished career in law and politics, he now shares that passion with his students in his U.S. Government and U.S. History classes. For Mr. Box, the most rewarding part of teaching is watching young men and women develop the ability to examine and understand the world around them—and discover how they can make it better.

Before joining St. Luke’s, Mr. Box built an impressive career in public service. He practiced law and served as City Attorney for Chickasaw for ten years, Municipal Judge for Satsuma for five years, and most notably represented his district in the Alabama Legislature for sixteen years. During his time in the Legislature, he realized he wanted to give back to the community he loves by sharing the knowledge and experience he had gained.

In 2013, Mr. Box joined the St. Luke’s family, where he continues to inspire students with his enthusiasm for history, government, and civic responsibility. His influence reaches far beyond the classroom, helping shape thoughtful and informed future leaders.

We are proud to celebrate Mr. Box’s performance on stage and the lasting impact he makes on our students every day.

DESIGNING DREAM HOMES IN INTRO TO ENGINEERING

Students in Mr. Mutchnick’s Intro to Engineering class have been putting their creativity and technical skills to work by designing and drafting their own “dream houses.” Through this project, students are learning the fundamentals of architectural design while gaining hands-on experience with the tools used by professional draftspersons.

As part of the process, students have practiced drawing to scale and creating detailed hand-drawn blueprints using real drafting tools. Once their initial designs are complete, they will take the next step by using Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software to digitally develop and refine their house plans.

This project gives students a glimpse into the world of engineering and architecture while helping them build valuable skills in design, precision, and problem-solving. It’s exciting to see their dream homes begin to take shape!

CELEBRATING PI DAY IN ALGEBRA 2

Mr. Heltz’s Algebra 2 class celebrated Pi Day with a sweet treat—cookies—while diving into some powerful math concepts!

Students have been learning about exponential equations, beginning with how to rewrite equations so they share the same base. Once the bases match, they can set the exponents equal to solve the problem.

After mastering the process, the class explored real-world applications of exponential equations, including modeling bacterial cell growth, understanding the distribution of recycled aluminum cans, and calculating compound interest.

A little Pi Day fun made learning these important concepts even more memorable!
