STEM(M) AT ST. LUKE'S

Featuring: STEM(M) IN ATHLETICS

Mike Szymanski treated the faculty/staff to a humorous yet in-depth discussion of the interrelationship between STEM(M) and sports. Specifically, he discussed his favorite sport, baseball. Being a math teacher for St. Luke's, he had a lot of insight to share! Below is a brief overview of his message to his colleagues.

Physics, engineering, and statistics are major elements of the game of baseball. When you get right down to it, the bat is just a simple machine, specifically, a third-class lever. The top of the bat, which is the heaviest, is the resistance, while the fulcrum is at the other end. Bat speed and exit velocity can be determined with calculations involving kinetic energy, momentum, and collision dynamics. Next, he explained the science of the perfect pitch. Physics is responsible for determining gravity, drag, and lift. By understanding these principles, a pitcher can make the ball rise, slow, drop, or curve. But that's not all that is important in executing the perfect pitch. The transfer of weight from the legs and hips through the body to the wrist and fingers by rocking, pivoting, rotating, and finally, delivery. He also discussed the stats of the game. Everything from scores, batting averages, fielding percentages, and several other performance standards are tracked and analyzed using statistics. He didn't leave out the safety equipment that is used to prevent injury and the technology that is employed to assist in training to practice and record plays rather than the manual paper notebooks once used.

CELEBRATING 100 (& 101) SUPER DAYS AT ST. LUKE'S

Celebrating 100 days of school is a big deal! 100 days of school is not only a huge accomplishment for the students, but also for the teachers. Many classes celebrated how far they've come and how much they've learned in just 100 days.

Also, St. Luke’s pawsome firsties are 101 days smarter! Mrs. McGinnis and Mrs. Dexter’s pups had a doggone good day celebrating the 101st day of school dressing as Dalmatians. They celebrated this milestone with fun, educational activities incorporating the number 101.

CENTER STAGE WORKS WITH CHOREOGRAPHER TO PREPARE FOR SPRING MUSICAL

St. Luke’s Center Stage learns choreography from Michael Seward for their upcoming Spring Musical, Matilda Jr. Seward is a Daphne native whose experience as an entertainer includes performances at the Radio City Music Hall Christmas Spectacular, Tokyo Disney Sea, and Norwegian Cruise Lines. He now runs Seward Studios, a theatrical production company that offers directing, vocal coaching, and choreography services.

ART+ GEOGRAPHY

Mrs. Morrow’s K5 class has been exploring art supplies through environments to dabble in different mediums each month. Students drew a muskox that was ready to trek through the frozen arctic! They explored simple color mixing as they created different tints for their ox by adding white to the brown paint.

COACH BEATTY LEADS VARSITY GIRLS SOCCER THIS SEASON

This week marks the beginning of Coach Austin Beatty's tenure as Head Coach of St. Luke's Varsity Girls Soccer team! Originally from Iowa, Coach Beatty spent most of his life in Saraland, Alabama, where he graduated from Saraland High School in 2014. He went on to play soccer for the Rams at the University of Mobile before transferring to the University of South Alabama, where he earned his undergraduate degree in Biology.

Coach Beatty began his coaching career in 2017 with St. Luke's YDL program and later became an organization coach for Mobile United Futbol Club, also known as Union 10 FC, where he coached teams ranging from state league to national league levels. He holds a USSF C license, which qualifies him to develop players and manage their performance environment.

Coach Beatty is committed to a player-centered approach that places players at the heart of the learning process. He has high expectations for his players and expects them to work hard both on and off the field, particularly in the classroom. For Coach Beatty, success means that his players learn to overcome challenges and apply the lessons they learn on the field to their everyday lives.

We're excited to have Coach Beatty on the field with the varsity girls this season. We wish him all the best and look forward to seeing the Wildcats succeed under his leadership. Go, Coach Beatty, and Go, Wildcats!
