STEM(M) AT ST. LUKE'S

Featuring: New STEM(M) Classes for the 2024-2025 School Year

As we enter the new year, the administration looks ahead to the next school year. We are excited to announce the incorporation of several new Project Lead The Way (PLTW) courses. The 7th and 8th grades will have Design and Modeling added to their elective choices and the upper school will also introduce a new elective - Aerospace Engineering!

To enhance these new classes, we will reach out to area engineers to join us as guest speakers and mentors. If you or someone you know might be interested in talking to or working with our students, please contact Diane McCleery @[email protected].

We will soon be announcing the new additions for the Japonica students.

ST. LUKE'S LADIES NIGHT OUT SUCCESS!

So many great ladies came to the sold-out event to enjoy appetizers, beverages and pottery! It was so much fun that there are already requests for another one! New friendships and great memories were made. Most of all, we enjoyed spending time with YOU! Thanks to everyone who supported St. Luke's Visual Arts Department!

ST. LUKE'S K5 ARTISTIC ADVENTURES

During Mrs. Morrow’s Art Class, K5 students learn different art techniques, one of these being painting with marker - which involves using a marker to create a drawing and then using a paintbrush and water to blend the marker strokes. Students drew a chameleon utilizing this technique as part of their rainforest unit. By blending the marker strokes, the students could create a vibrant and realistic image of the chameleon on paper. This technique helps students develop their artistic skills and encourages them to experiment with different materials and techniques to create unique and exciting works of art.

MCGINNIS GIRLS WERE ST. LUKE'S EMPLOYEES FOR A DAY

Ally McGinnis was Mrs. Morrow for a morning. She helped teach art, helped get supplies, and was treated to a special Chick-fil-A lunch. Ally says her favorite part of the day was, "Helping K4 make their colorful Christmas trees."

Lauren McGinnis was Mrs. Sandy for a morning. She answered the phones, signed tardy students in before walking them to class, made copies, and had a special lunch with Mrs. Sandy. Lauren says her favorite part of the day was "Answering the phone, and I got my own name badge."

We're confident the McGinnis girls get their dedication and ability to work hard from their sweet mom, Mrs. McGinnis (1st-grade teacher & SL+ director!)

GERMS ARE NOT FOR SHARING AT ST. LUKE'S!

Some of our Biomed students visited the K4 classes to discuss the importance of adequately washing hands just in time for peak flu season! According to health experts, giving kids explanations and educational activities behind these basic hygiene practices can go a long way toward helping them become more germ-conscious.

CHRISTMAS TREE DECORATING CONTEST WINNERS!

Mrs. Cummings' talented art students made ornaments for the Christmas tree displayed at Mobile Regional Airport. The tree theme this year was "Sweet Home Alabama." Each Art 1 and Pottery 1 student selected a city and made ornaments to represent each. The advanced classes made the bigger items to unify the tree - such as the tree topper and the base of the tree. The 7th and 8th-grade art students created homes that represent their idea of "home." Mrs. Lersch's 6th graders stitched the names of different cities on AL ornaments.

Thanks to ALL who voted and helped St. Luke's win a prize!

BIOMED GUEST SPEAKER: HEALTHY DIET

Monique McMillan, MS, RDN, LDN, District Nutrition Director for the Mobile County Health Department WIC Program, is a registered dietician who discussed the components of a healthy diet. She also discussed the Mediterranean diet, different types of vegetarian diets, and the Keto diet.

ST. LUKE'S STUDENTS SERVE

Willie Knight and Chatman Stephenson volunteered to help with Breakfast with Santa for the M.A.R.C. held at St. Dominic Catholic Church. They helped prepare and serve dinners to 100+ mentally challenged adults and assisted Santa with the distribution of gifts. That's the SPIRIT!

ST. LUKE'S RE-ENROLLMENT UNTIL - JANUARY 24th

All eligible families should have received a contract via email from DocuSign. Please complete the re-enrollment contract online. Contracts are due by January 24, 2024 to avoid a late fee. If you have any questions, please email Mrs. Banks, and she will direct you to the appropriate staff member.

(OUTERWEAR POLICY REMINDER)

If the temperature drops below 35 degrees, students may wear personal heavy coats that are not part of St. Luke's uniform requirements. If you have any questions, please contact your director. Stay warm, Wildcats!
