DESIGNS COME TO LIFE: CIVIL ENGINEERING & ARCHITECTURE STUDENTS EXPLORE DOWNTOWN MOBILE
Mrs. Haynes’ Civil Engineering and Architecture students brought their classroom learning to life through both hands-on projects and an engaging field trip. After researching and building models of various architectural styles, students set out on a walking tour of downtown Mobile to experience history and design up close.
The tour featured stops at some of the city’s most iconic landmarks, including the historic Old City Hall, the Van Antwerp Building, and the RSA Battle House lobby—where students tried out the famous whispering arches. Along the way, they studied architectural styles such as Greek Revival, Beaux-Arts, and Egyptian Revival, and discussed how adaptive reuse helps preserve these important buildings.
Students enjoyed lunch at The Cheese Cottage and capped the day with a sweet treat from Cammie’s Old Dutch.
The experience gave students the opportunity to connect classroom lessons with real-world examples of how architecture, engineering, history, and culture all come together to shape our community. Through this course, students are introduced to essential aspects of building and site design, applying math, science, and engineering practices to design residential and commercial projects and document their work with 3D architectural design software.
Bravo to Mrs. Haynes for such an incredible learning experience!
