EXPLORING THE SCIENCE OF OTOLITHS:
UNVEILING FISH AGES WITH MS. EMILY
Thank you to Ms. Emily, Penelope’s mom, for teaching about otoliths and how they are used to age fish. An otolith is a calcium carbonate structure located in the inner ear that aids in balance and hearing and is also used to determine a fish’s age. Otoliths are found in freshwater and saltwater fish. Students observed and dissected a fish and then observed an otolith under a microscope to find out the age of the fish by counting the rings.

EXPLORING EARLY ORBITAL MECHANICS IN AEROSPACE ENGINEERRING CLASS
Students in Mrs. Haynes' Aerospace Engineering class delved into the history of orbital mechanics, developing an appreciation for the early pioneers who laid the groundwork for our understanding of celestial movements. By researching the theories and subsequent criticisms of these early thinkers, students gained valuable insights into the evolution of orbital science.
The study of orbiting bodies can be traced back to ancient Greece, where early astronomers and philosophers made significant strides in observing the planets. These initial efforts focused on the motions of celestial bodies within our solar system and set the stage for future advancements in understanding how orbits function. Through these explorations, students not only learned about historical theories but also recognized the enduring impact of these early contributions on modern aerospace engineering.

ST. LUKE'S STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN REAL-WORLD EMERGENCY SIMULATION IN MASS CASUALTY DRILL
St. Luke's Biomedical Sciences students participated in a mass casualty drill at the University of South Alabama, playing the roles of "victims" in a simulated emergency scenario. The students immersed themselves in their roles by studying their assigned injuries and learning the appropriate responses. With the application of moulage, a special effects makeup technique, they convincingly portrayed victims of a mass shooting.
The mass casualty drill was designed to mirror the intensity and unpredictability of a real-life emergency. As the scenario unfolded, there were screams, moans, and cries for help, creating an authentic atmosphere for the healthcare students. University of South Alabama students, along with Mobile Fire Rescue, members of law enforcement, and local ambulance services, were actively involved in providing immediate, hands-on care in a high-pressure environment.
St. Luke’s students were promptly assessed and treated at the scene before being transported by ambulance to a simulated field hospital. They underwent further evaluation and treatment from graduate students specializing in occupational therapy, physical therapy, and physician assistant studies. This comprehensive drill enabled healthcare students to put their classroom learning into practice, gaining valuable feedback from their professors in the process.
Participating in this drill gave our students an invaluable opportunity to experience the chaos and demands of a real-world emergency. It allowed them to better understand emergency care dynamics and the importance of teamwork and communication in critical situations.

NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECT
Megan McDonough led the National Honor Society's inspiring community project this past Saturday. Megan coordinated the collection of old t-shirts, which were creatively transformed by students into hundreds of dog toys for the Mobile County Animal Shelter. We know their contribution will make a meaningful impact on the lives of the shelter animals. The project was a huge success - showcasing the dedication of our students to contributing positively to our community!
