MEGAN'S BIOMEDICAL SCIENCES JOB SHADOW: FOOD SCIENCE

Megan has been exploring her college options with a focus on food science, prioritizing institutions with well-equipped labs. She was thrilled to witness South Alabama's laboratory firsthand. Dr. Alison Henry extended an invitation for Megan to sit in on her upcoming labs, offering Megan a chance to experience a real college lab environment.

During the college lecture and lab, Megan explored the intriguing world of food science under Dr. Henry's guidance. The session focused on extracting milk proteins and converting them into casein glue, showcasing its various industrial applications. Megan participated in a lab where students heated milk, added vinegar to precipitate casein curds, and then treated them with ammonia to create an adhesive. Although the casein glue's bonding strength was weaker than regular glue, students crafted structures from popsicle sticks. Despite some challenges, some groups achieved impressive results, like a rural scene with windmills and cows.

Megan gained valuable insights into the composition of milk, which includes casein and whey proteins. She learned that adding vinegar to milk neutralizes the negative charge of casein, causing it to form curds at a specific pH level. These curds are essential in making cottage and cream cheese and have significant uses in industries such as adhesives, textiles, and cosmetics. Megan found the experience educational and enjoyable, and she eagerly anticipates participating in more labs with Dr. Henry.

"HEART" FILLED LEARNING FUN IN

MRS. MAJEWSKI'S K4 CLASS

Mrs. Majewski’s K4 class turned learning into an engaging game with a sight word activity. Mrs. Majewski made it “rain” heart shapes, each with a sight word. Students eagerly participated, searching for hearts, and reading the words aloud!

HALLIE DICKINSON & T.A.L.L. STUDENTS

EXPERIENCE LOCAL GOVERNMENT

St. Luke's very own Hallie Dickinson and her fellow T.A.L.L. students enjoyed an inspiring field trip hosted by Mayor Sandy Stimpson and the Mobile City Council. They had the unique opportunity to attend a council meeting and tour the Mayor's office, gaining firsthand insights into local government and civic engagement.

INVESTIGATING CELLULAR RESPIRATION IN PLANTS

Biology and Honors Bio students investigated to determine if plants use cellular respiration. We know plants use photosynthesis to make energy, but do they also use the process of cellular respiration to make energy? Humans and other animals use this process. Students designed experiments testing either the amount of oxygen or carbon dioxide in a bio chamber containing plastic beads, dry peas, and germinating peas. Both oxygen and carbon dioxide have roles in cellular respiration, either as inputs or outputs. After designing and conducting their investigation, students analyzed their data, developing a scientific argument containing their claim, evidence, and reasoning. Students then presented their argument boards to their classmates in small, three-minute conferences.

BIOMEDICAL SCIENCES GUEST SPEAKER: NAVIGATING GRIEF WITH CHELCEY GIBSON, MS, ALC, NCC

Chelcey Gibson, a certified grief counselor, offers invaluable insights into the complex journey of grieving. She explains the various stages that individuals typically experience during their grieving process, emphasizing that while these stages can provide a framework, each person's journey is unique.
