AVERY VANALSTINE'S JOB SHADOW: BURN TREATMENT
Avery VanAlstine's second Biomedical Sciences job shadow focused on burn treatment, where she observed Dr. Ryan Deci and Dr. Caleb Butts handle two complex burn cases and discuss a third.
The first patient was a diabetic with severe bilateral burns on her feet. Due to neuropathy, they had lost sensation in her feet and unknowingly burned them while standing in a hot shower. The injuries were extensive, with a 6x10 cm burn on the right foot and a 12x10 cm burn on the left foot. To aid healing, a skin graft was harvested from the left thigh using saline and epinephrine to lift the skin while minimizing bleeding. The graft was then carefully placed over the burns.
The second case involved a patient who had sustained severe burns from a house fire, affecting the right flank, right arm, abdomen, and chest. The procedure focused on replacing a previous donor graft, which had failed due to poor circulation. The team carefully removed the compromised graft and secured a new one, ensuring proper integration and coverage to promote healing.
The third case involved another patient with severe burns on the posterior side of his leg and buttocks. Given the extent of the injuries, an Allograft was chosen as the best treatment option. Allografts, derived from cadaver skin, serve as temporary biological dressings that protect the wound and promote healing until the patient’s own skin can be used for grafting. While not permanent, this procedure is critical in preventing infection and reducing pain during the recovery process.

HONORING A LEGACY: THE JOHN WESLEY HOLT LEGACY RUN
The John Wesley Holt Legacy Race was a special way to celebrate a life that impacted many people and a way to ensure his legacy will continue to inspire others for years to come. It featured inflatables, face painting, an appearance by Southpaw, University of South Alabama Cheerleaders, Azalea Trail Maids,
St. Luke’s Cheerleaders, food trucks, and a car wash!
The car wash fundraiser is an important part of the Legacy Run. Reed Hardy, owner of Hardy Auto Detailing and an alum of St. Luke’s (class of 2017), generously contributed by offering car washes during the event. The proceeds from this initiative went towards the John Wesley Scholarship Fund.
Thanks to everyone who participated and supported this memorable event, helping us celebrate
John Wesley’s life and a cause near and dear to our hearts.
