HANDS-ON LEARNING: BIOMEDICAL SCIENCES STUDENTS EXPLORE PHLEBOTOMY, BLOOD DONATION, AND BRAIN ANATOMY
Biomedical Sciences Fundamentals I and II students joined Mrs. McCleery for several hands-on activities and lessons last week. They started with practical activities related to venipuncture and phlebotomy. They learned to identify and mark prominent veins in the forearm, applied tourniquets, and discussed anatomical landmarks critical for stabilizing veins during blood draws. Additionally, they explored different laboratory tests and the corresponding vacutainer colors used for each test.
Danielle Anderson from LifeSouth Community Blood Centers provided an insightful session on blood types and components. She highlighted the primary groups requiring blood products: cancer patients, orthopedic surgery patients, and individuals with traumatic injuries. Anderson emphasized the increasing need for blood donations, especially as older donors become ineligible due to medication use, urging younger generations to contribute regularly.
The classes then delved into diabetes management, focusing on insulin therapy. Students learned about various injection methods, including intravenous (IV), intramuscular (IM), intradermal (ID), and subcutaneous (SQ) injections. They practiced administering SQ insulin injections using practice pads and measured blood glucose levels, observing the effects of diet on blood sugar.
In a creative exploration of brain anatomy, students used theater bald caps to map out major brain structures and their functions. This engaging activity involved drawing and labeling key areas such as the lobes, brain stem, and amygdala on the caps, providing a memorable and educational experience that will aid their future studies in Anatomy and Physiology.

K4 HIBERNATION ADVENTURE
Our K4 students are learning about the fascinating topic of hibernation and how animals survive the cold winter months. Students were encouraged to bring a stuffed animal to “hibernate.” Hopefully, these animals will sleep for their hibernation entirety and then emerge from their den on the first day of spring hungry and ready to find food!

ST. LUKE'S CHRISTMAS TREE WINS FIRST PLACE AT MOBILE REGIONAL AIRPORT
Mrs. Cummings' art classes have truly outdone themselves this year by creating and decorating a stunning tree for the competition at the Mobile Regional Airport. Each student in Art I and 7th and 8th grade selected a country and created 4 ornaments representing their country. Pottery students created a well-known structure from their chosen country around the tree skirt. Art 1 students then created a miniature passport from their country. 7th and 8th grade students created a paper person representing their country. Advanced Art students created the garland with letters to Santa from around the world, enlarged stamps from different countries, a tree skirt designed to look like a compass rose, and our beautiful tree topper collaged to look like the earth with a moving airplane towing a banner that says, 'What a Wonderful World.'
Last week, Mrs. Cummings received the exciting news that St. Luke's had secured first place in the competition. Congratulations to Mrs. Cummings and all the talented students—your hard work and creativity have made us incredibly proud!
