ST. LUKE'S IS LEADING THE WAY IN STEM+M
Did you know that St. Luke’s is the only school in our area to fully integrate all five STEM+M components into our K2-12th grade curriculum? STEM+M education goes beyond academics; it’s about understanding and influencing the world. The ability to think critically, solve problems, and adapt to evolving technologies is essential.
Our students experience hands-on classes that engage them in real-world learning, preparing them for future success. We take pride in watching our bright and engaged learners enjoy exploring science, technology, engineering, math, and medicine!

RECORD-BREAKING SNOWFALL TRANSFORMS ST. LUKE'S INTO A WINTER WONDERLAND
Mobile experienced an unprecedented weather event, setting a new record for snowfall last Tuesday. The National Weather Service reported that by 6:10 p.m., an astounding 7.5 inches of snow had blanketed the area surrounding its office in west Mobile. This remarkable accumulation surpasses the previous all-time record of 6 inches, which had stood since 1895.
The photos of our campuses covered in snow are beautiful!

REAL-WORLD LEARNING IN ACTION: JOB SHADOWING AT UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL
Can you believe the incredible opportunities St. Luke’s senior Biomedical Sciences students experience? Avery's initial job shadow with Dr. Caleb Butts at University Hospital was nothing short of extraordinary. She had the chance to witness two surgeries, three trauma cases, and participate in post-operative rounds.
During her time in the operating room, Avery observed a surgery on a patient with third-degree burns on their lower right arm. The surgical team took the time to explain each step of the procedure to her, providing an invaluable learning experience. In the second surgery, Avery watched as the team performed debridement and drainage on a necrotic bladder.
Avery's experience extended to the fast-paced environment of the trauma unit. Alongside a third-year medical student and a surgical intern, she observed three trauma cases: a car crash victim, a pedestrian struck by a vehicle, and a gunshot wound to the chest. Between each case, Avery participated in post-op rounds, gaining insight into patient recovery processes.
Throughout these experiences, Dr. Butts provided continuous support, checking in with Avery to address her questions and offering detailed explanations of injuries and treatment plans. This mentorship ensured that Avery not only observed but also understood the complexities of medical care, enriching her educational journey.
We sincerely appreciate Dr. Butts’ generous gift of time and passion for teaching students that include those in St. Luke’s Biomedical Sciences Program!

JAPONICA STUDENTS EXPLORE ROBOTIC HAND ENGINEERING
Japonica Campus students recently delved into a fascinating biomedical engineering project focused on robotic hands, an innovative creation by our talented alumnus, Zach McCleery. They examined the intricacies of robotic hand assembly, where each component was meticulously 3D printed and pieced together. These robotic hands are designed to aid children born without hands, offering them enhanced mobility and the ability to perform basic functions. Through this hands-on experience, students gained valuable insights into the practical applications of engineering in the medical field, inspiring our next generation of innovators!

K5 CREATES A WINTER WONDERLAND OF LEARNING
Mrs. Smith's classroom was filled with laughter and excitement as it became a winter wonderland of learning - not with ordinary snowflakes, but snowballs packed with math challenges!
Mrs. Smith wrote subtraction facts on the crumbled paper. As the music played, students tossed their paper snowballs. When the music stopped, the real challenge began - students had to go back to their seats, unwrap their snowball, and solve their subtraction problem.
This was such a fun activity that reinforced subtraction skills, and encouraged teamwork, quick thinking, and a love for learning!

CAMMIE MOORE: ST. LUKE'S RISING CULINARY STAR SET TO HOST LOCAL EVENT & GIVE BACK
Cammie Moore, an eighth-grade student at St. Luke's, has made quite the name for herself in the culinary world. Known as "Griller Girl," Cammie has been showcasing her exceptional cooking skills in competitions for several years, proudly representing Loblolly Farm and Dragonfly Dust Seasoning. With her impressive abilities, she has amassed a dedicated following, leading to numerous requests for cooking demonstrations and appearances at venues selling Dragonfly Dust. She has earned numerous trophies and a respected reputation as a stellar young chef in the local professional culinary community.
This year, Cammie and her team, known as the Lady Dragonflies—comprised mainly of St. Luke's eighth-grade girls' volleyball team and middle school cheerleaders—have enjoyed remarkable success. They have competed in events like the Mobtown Mac-Down and the renowned Grilled Cheese competition, bringing home accolades and further solidifying their status in the culinary scene.
Cammie is embarking on her first community event, "Mobile's Best Burger Championship," set to take place in Semmes, Alabama, on May 3, 2025. She has invited local celebrities to join her as judges, adding an exciting twist to the competition. In a generous effort to give back, Cammie aims to direct the sponsorship funds from this event towards St. Luke's tuition assistance program, hoping to provide more students with access to a quality education.
Mark your calendars and join Cammie for this special occasion! In addition to the burger competition, attendees can enjoy a variety of attractions, including arts and crafts, product and service booths, a jumping castle, and live music. It promises to be a day of fun and community spirit, all for a great cause. Don't miss the chance to support Cammie and the future of St. Luke's students!
