BUDDY THE ELF SPREADS CHRISTMAS CHEER AT ST. LUKE'S!

We had a VERY special visitor on campus this week… Buddy the Elf himself! Buddy brought his signature Christmas cheer as he helped with morning carpool, sang joyfully with our chapel choir, popped into classrooms to share smiles, and even assisted a teacher with grading tests—complete with overly positive Buddy-style comments! He also couldn’t resist joining in on some hands-on fun in the science lab.

We are so grateful that Buddy traveled through the seven levels of the Candy Cane Forest, the Sea of Swirly-Twirly Gumdrops, and the Bankhead Tunnel just to visit our wonderful Wildcats before Christmas Break. Thank you, Buddy, for filling St. Luke’s with extra sparkle and Christmas magic!

ST. LUKE'S BIOMEDICAL SCIENCES TRAUMA WEEK 2025

DAY ONE

It's one of the weeks our Biomedical Sciences students look forward to most... Trauma Week!

THANK YOU to Mobile Fire-Rescue and Mobile Police Department, who kicked off our 8th Annual Trauma Week today with a powerful real-world scenario. First responders arrived on the “scene” of an unsupervised house party gone wrong, where students had discovered a friend

(our Biomed manikin) unresponsive.

EMS demonstrated patient assessment, treatment, and transport procedures before leading an in-depth Q&A. Students learned what first responders look for, how they make rapid decisions, and how quickly lifesaving actions must happen. An unforgettable start to Trauma Week! Next, our 17-year-old patient will be in the ER, and we will continue following her progress as she moves through the healthcare continuum.

Staged unsupervised house party.

Students discovered a friend unresponsive at the house party and made the right decision

to call 911.

EMS demonstrated patient assessment,

treatment, and transport.

Mobile Fire & Rescue and the Mobile Police Department held a Q&A session to discuss

their roles in this scenario.

DAY TWO: EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT SIMULATION

Students entered the Emergency Department to observe Keri Bryant and Kat Loveless, ED and SANE (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner) nurses from USA Health, as they managed our critical patient upon arrival. Students participated in demonstrations of airway management, intubation, safe restraint application, blood alcohol testing, and forensic evidence collection. These nurses also explained how they balance stabilizing the patient with gathering accurate information, maintaining patient safety, and following legal protocols. This session gave students a clearer picture of how quickly the ED team must work and how many coordinated steps take place in the first moments of care.

DAY THREE – NEURO ICU

Mid-week, our patient moved to the Neuro Intensive Care Unit, where our Biomed students learned about neurological monitoring, EVDs (external ventricular drains), critical-care documentation called SBAR, and the physical recovery process after an overdose and traumatic fall. They gained insight into how ICU nurses track subtle neurological changes, manage high-risk equipment, coordinate with physicians, and support families during the most fragile phases of care. Once the patient regained consciousness, she disclosed that she had vaped earlier in the evening and later tested positive for opioids from a laced vape device. This discovery added a powerful real-world layer to the scenario, underscoring the increasing danger of unknown substances in counterfeit vapes and the role medical staff play in identifying

hidden risks.

DAY FOUR - ALTAPOINTE HEALTH: BEHAVIORAL ASSESSMENT & FAMILY SUPPORT

By Day 4, the patient had been physically stabilized and discharged from the ICU. She then entered a behavioral-health treatment facility to begin addressing the underlying causes of her risky behavior. Julia Minter, a counselor at Alta Pointe Health, explained how behavioral health teams assess teens, what rehabilitation actually means, how they involve families, how they identify patterns of unsafe choices, and how they help patients rebuild toward a healthy, stable life. Our Biomed students learned that recovery is not only physical; it includes mental health, accountability, counseling, and intentional work toward safer decision-making.

DAY FIVE - DRUG EDUCATIONAL COUNCIL: PREVENTION & LIFELONG CHOICES

To conclude Trauma Week, the Drug Education Council will speak with students about the dangers of alcohol, prescription drug misuse, street drugs, vaping, and the growing threat of fentanyl-laced substances. Their presentation will focus on prevention, refusal skills, gateway behaviors, and the critical importance of recognizing early warning signs in themselves and others.

JAPONICA CAMPUS STUDENTS STEP INTO THE WORLD OF MEDICAL CARE - EVEN TREATING ONE OF SANTA'S ELVES

Our young scientists at the Japonica Campus put their skills to the test this week as they provided hands-on “medical care” for a variety of patients in the Biomedical Sciences lab — including a very special visitor straight from the North Pole! Santa’s elf stopped by with a few holiday health concerns, and our students were quick to diagnose, treat, and send him on his merry way.

We love seeing our Wildcats dive into learning with curiosity, confidence, and a little Christmas magic!

K5 SHARES SWEET HOLIDAY CHEER WITH MURRAY HOUSE

Our K5 students embraced the spirit of giving this week as they made gingerbread for the residents of Murray House, hoping to brighten their holiday season.

TROOP 8743 GIVES BACK IN A BIG WAY!

Troop 8743 collected donated items to help children and families in need this Christmas season, and their hard work truly made a meaningful impact! The girls thoughtfully packed four backpacks overflowing with love and care, two for girls ages 4–7 and two for girls ages 8–10. Each backpack was filled with essentials, comfort items, and special surprises chosen to brighten a child’s holiday.

These backpacks are distributed through Compassion Ministry sites and church partners that support families in need across at least seven states along the Mississippi River. Thanks to the generosity and teamwork of Troop 8743, children who might otherwise go without will feel seen, supported, and celebrated this Christmas.

We’re incredibly proud of our Girl Scouts for stepping up, spreading kindness, and truly living out the spirit of service. Way to go, Troop 8743, your generosity shines bright and inspires our

entire school community!
