This October, Maple the rescue dog was approaching her second anniversary at the WSHS Adoption Center. Since she had arrived, she had dealt with multiple medical conditions and had struggled to find a forever home. Maple loves people, she is one of the happiest dogs with her tail wagging no matter what time it is.
Unfortunately, an unknown medical issue occurred when Maple started to have swelling in her throat and difficulty breathing. She was intubated and hospitalized at the veterinary hospital for 3 days. We were not sure if she would live, but thankfully, Maple survived. With antibiotics and more treatments to help her incontinence, Maple slowly got better.

Our volunteers and staff showered Maple with love and care, helping her recover. Maple returned to running and playing, bringing joy to everyone with her big smile. However, she still waited for her turn to be adopted.
In October, we featured Maple all month long on social media and in the community, and she attended the Adoption Event at Gerald Subaru of Naperville. On October 31st, Maple was finally adopted into a loving home, with a send-off from staff and volunteers at the Adoption Center. Since her adoption day, we have received heartwarming updates from her new family, Maple loves her forever home!

This season of thanks, we are reflecting on gratitude for the compassionate community surrounding WSHS. Our lifesaving work is made possible by gifts of time, talent, and treasures from people who care. We are so thankful for everyone who supports our mission to help dogs and cats in need. From weekly volunteers to corporate volunteer projects, from monthly Paw Pal donors to pet supply drives, from educational partnerships to Sponsors and Grantors, community is truly the lifeblood of our organization.
Here are just a few of the things we are thankful for in the past month:
| The Bolingbrook Promenade partnered with us for the Costume Pet Parade with all proceeds benefitting WSHS. | A group of WSHS Volunteers reorganized and cleaned out the event supplies in the storage unit. | Enabled Remodeler and the Face To Face Marketing Network featured Gordy as the Enabled Paws Dog of the Week, sponsoring his adoption fee in honor of Naperville Roofing & Construction. | For National Animal Shelter & Rescue Appreciation Week, Board Member, Kim Sennerikuppam, hosted a free Recharge & Renew: Wellness Event with mindfulness and Reiki for WSHS volunteers and staff. | Quincy Station Apartments in Westmont hosted a Pet Donation Drive. | Support a great cause and throw your child a party they will always remember! Consider having a birthday party in the Humane Education room at the WSHS Adoption Center. | | Pet Of The Month: Lil Rosco! | |
Lil Rosco is a 9 year old Shih Tzu with a heart as big as his personality. He may not see perfectly, but don't worry - this little guy will always find his way to you.
November is Adopt A Senior Pet Month, and Lil Rosco is the perfect senior dog to adopt this month. He is a polite gentleman who is respectful of cats and would do great with another calm dog as a buddy. Quick movements can startle him, so he would prefer a quieter home without small children - somewhere he can relax, explore at his own pace, and enjoy life's simple comforts.
He's independent but affectionate, perfectly content batting his Nylabones around or curling up beside you on the couch. At night, he's a dream, sleeping peacefully in his crate without a peep.
If you're looking for a loyal, low-maintenance companion who thrives on routine (and doesn't mind a bit of extra guidance finding his way to the sofa), Lil Rosco is ready to fill your home with gentle love and quiet joy.
| To support Breast Cancer Awareness Month, WSHS Staff and Volunteers wore pink on October 24th for Wear It Pink Day. We know that every story is unique and every journey matters. Let's spread awareness about the disease, encourage early detection, honor those affected, and improve survival for all! | |
Honoring All Who Served
On November 11th, WSHS hosted a Veteran's Day Open House. Everyone had a wonderful time with donuts, coffee, and Wonder the Therapy Dog! In addition, all month long staff and volunteers are collecting needed items for veterans who are experiencing homelessness. WSHS is partnering with the Midwest Shelter for Homeless Veterans, and supplies will be delivered at the end of the month for the Freedom Commissary.

Kittens & Pilates
On November 8th, We partnered with Club Pilates in Woodridge to host our first ever Kittens & Pilates Class! Featuring adoptable kittens, everyone was feline good after this fun workout.
