September is National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month

On September 10th, the West Suburban Humane Society joined the International Association for Suicide Prevention in recognizing World Suicide Prevention Day. Suicide can affect every one of us. By raising awareness, reducing the stigma & encouraging action we can help to reduce the instances of suicide around the world.

As an animal welfare organization, we understand that suicide rates can be high among veterinary and animal care professionals. A 2019 Centers for Disease Control study shows veterinarians are between two to four times more likely to die by suicide than the general population.

Changing the narrative means fostering empathy and compassion for those who are struggling. It means listening without judgment, offering support, and guiding individuals towards help. Together, we can make a difference and prioritize suicide prevention, ensuring everyone gets the help they need.

There are resources available if you or someone you know is in crisis. You are not alone. You can call or text 988, or text TALK to 741741.

Volunteer Appreciation Event

We had a great time celebrating our amazing volunteers at the Volunteer Appreciation Event! We had games, music, puppy time, prizes, giveaways, and delicious soft pretzels.

At the West Suburban Humane Society, our volunteers go above and beyond for the dogs and cats in our care. We are so grateful to have such a compassionate and kind community of over 400 active volunteers. Whether you are a new volunteer or a volunteer of many years, we appreciate you.

Thank you so much to our sponsor Gerald Subaru of Naperville for making this event possible!

Pet Spotlight: Fiddlesticks!

Fiddlesticks is a 4 month old tuxedo cat, and this silly kitten loves everyone! He was found as a tiny kitten, abandoned in Western Springs. A local TNR Trapper found him with three other orphaned kittens and brought him to the West Suburban Humane Society to get him the care he needed.

Fiddlesticks was really small when he came through our doors, weighing only 1.5 pounds! This little kitten went to a foster home for several months before growing big enough to be in the Kitten Room at the Adoption Center.

Now Fiddlesticks is ready to be adopted, and he might just be your new best friend

The West Suburban Humane Society has joined the nationwide campaign from the ASPCA called The Rescue Effect.

Many shelters across the country are full, and animals, especially dogs, are often staying longer in their care before being adopted. This is creating a surplus of animals, and without enough adoptions, many shelters are struggling to meet the needs of animals in their communities.

5.8 million dogs and cats entered shelters and rescues in 2024, and 4.2 million shelter animals were adopted. Unfortunately, not enough animals were adopted to significantly reduce the number of dogs and cats in shelters nationwide.

Adopting and fostering makes a big difference for animals in need! Another way to help is by joining us in advocating and educating. Together we can spread awareness about the dogs and cats in need in our community and nationwide!

Tails on the Trails

This September, WSHS was at the Morton Arboretum for Tails on the Trails! With an estimated 1,600+ dogs in attendance, it was a beautiful day for the community to come together. With fun activities and pup cups, dogs and their humans had a lot of fun stopping by our table.

Kittens & Cocktails

On August 26th, we held a one-of-a-kind cocktail class and fundraising event. Participants learned how to make 3 different cocktails with 7 furry friends running around! One little kitten named Pixie Stix even took a nap in a giant martini glass (pictured below). Together we raised over $3,000 for above and beyond rescue care!

Thank you to Tierra Distilling Co & Cafe for sponsoring and hosting this exclusive event!

JT Farrero built a Storage Bench for the lobby and a dog Scent Wall for his Eagle Scout Project.
