I have been thinking about uncertainty a lot this week. Everything feels like quicksand, extreme weather events are more common, the possibility of WW3 is on the news, the upcoming cabinet looks like a clown car, and nobody knows what will happen to the economy or stock market. What about Medicare and Social Security? Then, the McRib reappears for the holidays at McDonalds.
The only thing I am certain of this week is that the McRib is God-awful, although I get sucked in by the ads and have that disastrous gastric adventure every 5 years just to take a bite and then shudder at the texture and taste. There is something wonderful and routine in my reaction to it. A rock-solid certainty in a shifting landscape, and my outrage at the McRib makes me laugh.
It's a week of leaning into uncertainty and finding humor in the moments. In my house, on any given day, one of us can't find our wallet, phone, or car keys, and we scour through disorganized drawers to find treasures we put away for safekeeping years ago. We return our treasures to their hiding places, delusional in the belief that somehow, we will remember where we stored them this time. Outside, male roadrunners have been arriving in my yard, looking for love, and I wonder if I am giving off a weird scent as I disappoint them one after the other.
Life is like trying to assemble furniture from a Swedish store without the instructions—you're filled with excitement at first, but then you realize you have a pile of mysterious parts, a vague idea of what the final product should look like, and a nagging feeling that the extra screw is crucial. You contemplate whether the wobbly table you've created is a groundbreaking design choice or just a tragic error, all the while questioning every choice you ever made, knowing the extra screw is going to bite you in the ass eventually. That's why there is pizza and McRib in life. The break from the brain, the break from all the over thinking.
Kim
"Courageous men never lose the zest for living even though their life situation is zestless; cowardly men, overwhelmed by the uncertainties of life, lose the will to live. We must constantly build dykes of courage to hold back the flood of fear."
Martin Luther King, Jr.
I am all for building dykes of courage. Although I suspect it would be like assembling the 350-piece Ikea bed frame without instructions.

This Week's Recommendation
Shrinking on Apple TV
I liked this series a lot more than I thought I would. It feels good and touches on some serious subjects.
'Shrinking' review: Jason Segel, Harrison Ford plus 'Ted Lasso' energy : NPR
Martha on Netflix
Martha Steward Documentary on Netflix. This is a fascinating look at Martha. I admire her warts and all. She is brilliant and tough. She sometimes seems uncomfortable being vulnerable and revealing her emotions during the tough challenges in her life. I get the feeling she has no desire to divulge, but the gossip machine must be fed, and she is going along with the interview. I have always loved her wicked sense of humor.
